Structural steel is what a job gets framed out of, cut and welded in a workshop or on site. Jay Shree Infra keeps it at its Saharsa godown on two racks that behave differently. The light rack is angle, patti, square and round bar, and it is what grill, gate, window and railing work here is built from; HMB and Solar are the two names on it. The heavy rack is channel, joist and beam, in SAIL, Shyam Metalics and MC, and it goes into shed frames, godown structures and platforms. MS plate sits beside them and carries no brand name at all, so a plate order works off thickness and cut size.
Workshops buy most of it. A fabricator running grill and gate work draws angle for the frame, patti for the flat bars, and square or round for the fillings, then orders the same four sections again on the next job. Thekedars and project contractors buy the heavy sections, usually once for a job and by the tonne. Delivery goes out in our own vehicles to Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura. In the bazaar the shop is still known as Khagaria Wale.

What we stock
Eight shapes sit under this heading, and the shape decides how a size gets written down.
- AngleEqual angle, written leg by leg by thickness. The published sizes run from 20x20x3 mm on the fabrication rack out to SAIL's 200x200x25 mm, and every one of them carries its own kilograms per metre.
- Flat (Patti)Width by thickness, from 19x6 mm upward. The two numbers that name a patti are the two its weight comes out of, so 25x5 and 25x6 are two different bars and two different bills.
- Square Bar / Square Section (Square)Two things share one word here, and solid square is what we stock under it. Solid square, 8 to 25 mm, is grill filling. Square hollow section, published 20x20 to 150x150 mm, is frame tube carrying a wall thickness the solid bar does not have at all, and it is worked out on the MS pipe page.
- MS Round Bar (Round)Solid round, 10 to 25 mm on the published list. Weight works out the way sariya's does, diameter squared over 162.
- ChannelDesignated depth by flange by web: MC 75x40x4.8 at 7.14 kg per metre, on up to MC 400x100x8.8. It arrives in mill lengths, which is why a channel order settles the length before the count.
- JoistOne counter word with no series settled behind it. It carries a nominal depth and never a designation, while the beam rows name ISMB, and at one nominal depth two rolled series are different sections carrying different masses.
- Beam (I-Beam)The medium beam series, ISMB 100 through ISMB 600. The Indian rolled series are designated by nominal depth, so that number is millimetres of depth and nothing about weight or span.
- MS PlatePlate by thickness and cut size, against SAIL's published mill range of 6 to 100 mm thick. Weight is length times width times thickness times 7.85, so a plate is ordered on three numbers and billed on one.

Two names carry the light rack and three carry the heavy one. Which sizes are standing in either changes with the last load, so give us the section and the size in the same breath.
- Solar StructureShop's PickAngle, patti, square and round bar under the Solar label, plain and galvanised, the galvanised side billing as Solar GI. Solar comes from the Alaknanda TMT group's mill, long stocked here and our first pick for grill and gate work.
- HMBShop's PickThe other name on the light rack: HMB iGrill in plain steel, HMB Grill Guard on the galvanised side, both published at 20 ft lengths. We supply and distribute for HMB. Its published angle starts at 20x20x3 mm, smaller than anything the heavy rack rolls.
Two of the five need a word. MC is two letters and names no mill; we bill it as it reaches us, and on tender work what counts is the marking rolled into the section and the certificate travelling with it. SAIL's published structural list is where the section masses here come from, and it says what a designation weighs, never what is standing in the godown this morning.

Before you order
A section takes three numbers
One number orders sariya, the diameter. Nothing on these two racks works that way. An angle is both legs and the thickness, so 40x40x5 mm and 40x40x6 mm are different bars, and a shop that asks for 40 wali angle has given us half an order. A patti is width and thickness, 25x5 mm against 25x6 mm. A channel is depth, flange and web, which is what MC 100x50x5 says. Read all three numbers off whatever the mistri wrote down and the answer comes back on one call.
Twenty feet on one rack, twelve metres on the other
HMB publishes iGrill and Grill Guard at 20 ft, which is how the light rack arrives and how a grill shop estimates. The heavy sections come the other way. SAIL publishes 12 metres as the normal supply length for sections off its Medium Structural Mill and Universal Section Mill, with other lengths by agreement, and the channel page under this one carries the designations behind that. A shed frame worked out in feet against a 12 metre section is where the waste comes from, and settling that before the order goes in is cheaper than settling it after the cut. Give us the finished lengths and the count, and we will say what one stock length yields.
What the order slip has to carry
The shape, all of its numbers, the length, how many pieces or how many kilos, and the village the load has to reach. On a tendered job, say so at the start of the call: the approved make list narrows the rack before anything else does. Grill aur gate ke liye MS lein ya GI?
The section is the same either way and only the coating changes. HMB publishes iGrill in plain steel and Grill Guard galvanised against one size list at one weight per metre, so a 25x25x5 mm angle is 1.766 kg per metre in both. The galvanised side is bought for steel that stands out in the weather, a verandah grill or a gate facing the road. Which of the two is in your size today is a call.
Channel, joist aur beam me kya farak hai?
A channel is a C in section, a beam is an I, and joist is the counter's word for the lighter I sections. Joist carries a nominal depth and never a designation, and the beam rows name ISMB. Give us the designation the drawing carries, ISMB 150 or MC 100x50x5, and there is nothing left to guess. Where the drawing only says joist, read us the depth and the span.
Loha kilo me milta hai ya piece me?
Both, and by the tonne as well. Angle, patti and square sell by kilo, piece, bundle and metric tonne. Round bar goes by kilo, piece and tonne, with no bundle against it, and channel, joist and beam the same three. Which basis a section is going on that day gets fixed on the call before the rate, and two quotes compare only when they stand on the same basis.
Shed ka pura loha ek gaadi me aa jayega?
Usually yes, and the length decides the vehicle before the weight does. Channel and beam arrive in mill lengths of about 10 to 12 metres, so we ask about the approach road before anything is loaded. Our own vehicles reach all 34 blocks of Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura, charged at the market rate for that route.
