A beam is the I shaped section a span is carried on. ISMB is the Indian Standard Medium Beam, the tapered flange family SAIL calls its conventional structurals. SAIL prints those tables, and the parallel flange ones beside them, as conforming to IS 808:2021, Hot Rolled Steel Beam, Column, Channel and Angle Sections, Dimensions and Properties. BIS lists it as the fourth revision with no amendment issued against it, and IS 12778:2004, which once covered parallel flange sections by itself, is among what it replaced.

At the counter the same rack is also called joist. Bring whichever word the paper carries; the steel is the same and the other word costs nothing.

Sizes

ISMB 100 to ISMB 600, and what each metre weighs

We keep twelve ISMB nominal sizes: 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 and 600. Beam comes in mill lengths of roughly 10 to 12 m, and every weight below is SAIL's, read off SAIL's own tables.

The conventional structurals list gives MB 100x50 at 8.95 kg per metre, MB 150x75 at 14.96, MB 200x100 at 24.17, MB 250x125 at 37.30 and MB 300x140 at 46.02. Deeper in the same brochure a comparison table prints ISMB 600x210 at 121.00, the top of the series we keep.

Ring and say the designation, and we tell you what is standing against it that morning and what it is going out at. A mass per metre becomes a piece weight on the length, which is the arithmetic the sariya weight chart sets out for a diameter.

Kis kaam me lagta hai

Beam goes into buildings, sheds, frames, platforms, warehouses and infrastructure work around Saharsa, and we sell it by the kilo, by the piece and by the metric tonne. SAIL's published application list for its structurals reaches a good deal further out: flyovers, foot over bridges, multi-level car parks, metro rail, industrial buildings, power plants, electric poles and truck bed frames.

Which beam a job takes sits on the structural drawing and belongs to whoever stamped it. IS 808:2021 is a dimensions and properties standard, so it settles what a section measures and what it weighs while saying nothing about a span or a load. Read us the designation as the drawing writes it and we will say what is on the floor against it.

  • Inside this series the depth is the whole name

    ISMB 300 is a complete order. There is no second 300 in the series to confuse it with, because the flange arrives with the depth and nobody picks it: SAIL's list pairs MB 100 with a 50 mm flange, MB 150 with 75, MB 200 with 100, MB 250 with 125 and MB 300 with 140. That is unusually easy for this rack. A channel wants all three of its numbers before it means anything, and outside the ISMB series a beam depth stops being enough as well, which is why a parallel flange name is printed with its mass inside it, as NPB 400x180x66.31. So lead with the letters. ISMB and a number closes the question in one breath.

  • Two flanges under one word

    SAIL rolls a second beam family beside the ISMB, branded NEX, and the flange is the whole of the difference. Its ISMB rows carry a flange slope of 98.0 degrees, so the inside face of the flange runs at a taper. Its parallel flange rows read 90.0, which is a flat face. The brochure then puts a figure on what that buys: ISMB 400 at 61.55 kg per metre against NPB 400x180x57.38 at 57.38, both carrying a section modulus about the major axis of 1020 cm3. The same published number on about four kilos less steel in every metre.

    What we keep against beam is the ISMB side of that. If a drawing asks for the parallel flange family, raise it on the call, and take the substitution as the engineer's line to move, never the shop's.

  • What SAIL rolls itself, and where that list stops

    SAIL prints the plant against every section on its conventional structurals list, and for medium beams it names five: MB 100x50, MB 150x75, MB 200x100, MB 250x125 and MB 300x140, all off Durgapur. Our series runs to ISMB 600, seven sizes past the end of that list, and the brochure covers the gap in a single line: besides its plant rolled sections it can also supply MB 100 mm to MB 600 mm through its External Processing Agencies.

    So above 300 it is worth asking on the call what is behind the steel, and asking again when the load is made up.

  • What can travel with the load

    SAIL's brochure lists mill certification as available with the Medium Structural Mill at Durgapur, with tensile, bend and impact testing behind it, sub zero temperature testing included. That is SAIL's statement about SAIL material. Say at the start of the call whether a certificate has to go with the load, and whether it must name the manufacturer, because that decides what can be loaded at all. Not every size is in every brand on a given day; call and we confirm what is standing. SAIL carries published section tables behind it, and Shyam Metalics rolls MS beams and joists on its own structural line.

One thing to keep straight on an order: on the channel rack MC is also the section designation for a medium channel. A beam designation opens MB, so on a beam order MC is only the brand name.

Beam sirf depth ke number se order ho jata hai?

In the ISMB series it does. ISMB 300 names one section, so the flange and the web come with the number instead of being chosen. Outside that series a depth stops being enough, which is why SAIL prints a mass inside a parallel flange name such as NPB 400x180x66.31. Give us the letters with the digits and there is nothing left to settle.

ISMB 500 ya 600 wala beam bhi aa jayega?

Ask on the call, and ask about what is behind it while you are at it. We keep the series to ISMB 600, and SAIL's brochure says it can supply MB 100 mm to MB 600 mm through its External Processing Agencies. What SAIL plant rolls on its own conventional list stops at MB 300x140, so which route a particular piece came by is worth asking before a tender load is made up.

46.02 kg, on SAIL's conventional structurals list, for MB 300x140. The same list gives MB 100x50 at 8.95, MB 150x75 at 14.96, MB 200x100 at 24.17 and MB 250x125 at 37.30. Those are nominal section masses and they belong to the mill. What a delivered piece weighs comes off the weighbridge, and beam sells here by the kilo, by the piece and by the tonne.

Ask when the order goes down and we will tell you what can be sent with that particular load. SAIL's brochure lists mill certification as available with its Medium Structural Mill at Durgapur, and names tensile, bend and impact testing including sub zero temperature. If the certificate has to travel, say so first, because it decides which material can be loaded.

Beam ki lambai yahan kat kar mil sakti hai?

Cutting at this end is settled on the call, along with the vehicle and where the piece has to come off it. Say the finished length you want and the length the drawing wants, because those are two questions and only the first one is ours. Where the paper calls for one unbroken piece across an opening, the cut is the engineer's to allow before it is ours to make.
