MS plate is the thick flat steel a workshop cuts a base plate, a gusset or a tank shell out of. Jay Shree Infra supplies it across Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura, off the same structural steel rack as the angle, channel, joist and beam. Of the eight shapes on that rack it is the only one sold with no brand name against it, so a plate order runs on two things a buyer measures instead: the thickness in millimetres and the size of the finished piece.
The published figures below are SAIL's, off two of its own documents about one plate mill, and the two do not agree with each other. What they settle between them is the band an Indian mild steel plate is rolled in, which is what any cut piece has to come out of. Thinner hot rolled steel leaves the mill as coil and sheet instead, and that side of it sits under steel sheets. Both rows describe one mill, the New Plate Mill at Rourkela. The first is SAIL's Plates brochure of July 2022 and the second its current export listing for that same mill, and they open the thickness at 6 mm and at 10 mm and close the length at 15000 mm and at 12000 mm. The rationalised size chart inside the brochure itself begins at 8 mm, so SAIL's own papers give three answers to where plate starts. The width band is the one figure both print the same way, 1500 to 4100 mm. What thickness is standing in this godown on a given day is a phone call and never a table.
Kis kaam me lagta hai
Plate is where a load gets spread out. Base plates under shed and godown columns, gussets at a truss joint, machine bases, platform and ramp decking, tank work, and the heavy fabrication that goes into bridge and project jobs: plate goes into all of it.
How thick it has to be is the drawing's decision and never the shop's. A base plate under a column is sized on the drawing along with the bolts that go through it, and so is the plate at a bracket or a splice. Where it is bolting to a channel or a beam, say which section it is going against when you ring, and read the plate size off the same sheet the section came off.
Three measurements make one weight
Plate carries no published kilograms per metre, and it cannot: it has no fixed section, because the piece you cut is the section. The sum the trade works on is length in metres, times width in metres, times thickness in millimetres, times 7.85. One metre by 500 mm at 10 mm thick comes to 39.25 kg, and the same piece at 6 mm comes to 23.55 kg. 7.85 is the density of steel and nothing more, and the sariya weight chart shows that same figure turning into the 162 a round bar gets divided by.
Plate is sold by the piece, by the kilo and by the tonne. Which of those three a job is going on gets settled on the call before anything else does.
The mill publishes how far off the nominal it may run
That sum works off nominal figures, and a rolled plate is allowed to sit off them. For its Bhilai plates SAIL publishes thickness tolerance as a percentage of nominal: plus 5.0 and minus 5.0 over 12 mm, plus 7.5 and minus 5.0 from 8 to 12 mm, and plus 12.5 and minus 5.0 below 8 mm. The New Plate Mill publishes the same slack in millimetres instead, plus or minus 0.27 mm from 8 to under 15 mm and plus or minus 0.50 mm from 80 to under 100 mm.
Width and length SAIL publishes plus only. A trimmed plate up to 8000 mm long, up to 2000 mm wide and up to 20 mm thick may run 10 mm over on width and nothing under, and on an untrimmed plate that figure goes to 100 mm. Plan the job off the sum, and let what is charged be what the steel weighs on the scale.
The letter after the E number is an impact test
SAIL prints its plate grades as IS 2062 E250, E300, E350, E410 and E450, with E550 at Bhilai, and puts a quality letter after each one: A, BR, B0 or C. On its own published table quality A carries no impact requirement at all, BR is tested at room temperature, B0 at 0 degrees C and C at minus 20 degrees C, all three at 27 joules on E250, E300 and E350.
So the E number is the minimum yield strength and the letter is the toughness, and a tender asking for E350B0 has asked for both halves. Read the whole designation off the drawing and say it on the phone, and on project work say with it whether a test certificate has to travel with the load.

Plate ka weight naap se kaise banta hai?
A piece one metre by 500 mm at 10 mm thick works out at 39.25 kg, and the same piece at 6 mm at 23.55 kg. The sum those come off is set out in the pointer above, and it answers in kilograms. There is no published weight per metre for plate the way an angle or a patti has one, because a plate has no fixed section until it is cut.
Kitne mm se upar use plate kehte hain?
SAIL gives three answers itself: 6 mm at the head of its Plates brochure, 8 mm on the rationalised size chart inside that same brochure, and 10 mm on its export listing for the same mill. Below whatever a mill is running, the same hot rolled steel is sold as coil and sheet. Give us the thickness in millimetres and the piece size and the word stops mattering.
E250 ke aage A, BR, B0 likha rehta hai, wo kya hota hai?
It is the impact test. On SAIL's own IS 2062 table for plates, quality A carries no impact requirement, BR is tested at room temperature, B0 at 0 degrees C and C at minus 20 degrees C, at 27 joules for E250, E300 and E350. SAIL publishes two markings for its New Plate Mill plates: spray paint on the top surface and on the side face for identification, and punched identification numbers, the grade and the SAIL logo. Plate here carries no fixed brand name, so which mark is on the plate standing here on a given day, and in what thickness, is answered on the phone.
Naap ki plate katwa kar mil jayegi?
Ask on the call, because it turns on what is standing and what a piece can come out of. Mill plate arrives in the widths and lengths published above, so a small piece is always cut from something larger and the cutting has to be arranged with the order. Give us the finished size, the thickness and how many pieces.
Ek plate utarne me kya dhyan rakhna hoga?
Weight per piece. A single 2500 by 1250 mm piece at 20 mm is about 490 kg on the sum, so tell us how it comes off the vehicle when you give us the sizes. Our own vehicles run to all 34 blocks of Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura, charged at the market rate for that route.
