Steel sheet reaches this counter under three names and the three are three different materials. HR is hot rolled: black mill finish, the thick end of the range, cut for heavy fabrication. CR is cold rolled, smooth and thin. GP is galvanised plain, a flat sheet under a hot dip zinc coating. Jay Shree Infra keeps all three at its Saharsa godown, and SAIL and Tata are the two names we stock, Tata leading as the name most sheet buyers here ask for. Loads go out to Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura in our own vehicles.
This is workshop material, so it is the fabricators, the bigger fabrication shops, the thekedars and the project companies who buy it. HR takes the heavy work: machinery, tanks, vehicle bodies and platforms. CR goes where the surface will show, into panels, cabinets, furniture and electrical enclosures. GP goes into ducting, panels and roofing components, wherever a flat sheet stands out in the weather. Trunk, box and almirah makers are among the steadiest buyers of the GP and CR sheet on this rack, and they take it in every size we carry. Ask for chadra at this counter and you will be sent to roofing and shed material instead. What we keep on this rack is flat sheet, bought to be cut and welded.

Three sheets, and the thickness band is most of what separates them.

Tata is the name asked for most in this category and leads this wall for that reason, with SAIL and JSW Steel behind it. Width and the thinnest gauge are not the same from one name to the next, so say which one you have been told to buy.
Tata reaches this rack under three names: Tata Kosh on GP sheet, Tata Steelium on CR sheet and Tata Astrum on HR sheet. Bokaro gets asked for by name here too. Bokaro is a SAIL plant, so the material is SAIL's and we bill it under that name. On galvanised sheet the plant is worth knowing: SAIL publishes its Bokaro coil at about 0.4 to 2.0 mm and its Rourkela sheet at about 0.35 to 1.25 mm, so the plant a sheet came off sets the thin end of what you can be given.

Three names, and really three thickness bands
The published mill ranges keep them apart quickest. Cold rolled runs thin, about 0.25 to 3.2 mm across the Tata Steelium sheet. Galvanised plain sits beside it, about 0.35 to 2.0 mm on SAIL's published GP range. Hot rolled begins near 1.6 mm and runs to 16 mm on SAIL's HR range. So a 1.2 mm job is CR or GP, a 6 mm job is HR, and 2 mm exists in all three, which is where most of the crossed wires at this counter start. At the thick end HR turns into plate, and MS plate is racked with the structural steel sections.
Width comes off the coil, length is cut
Sheet is rolled into a coil and cut off it, so the two dimensions do not give the same way. Width belongs to the coil: SAIL publishes HR widths of about 900 to 1850 mm and CR widths of about 876 to 1580 mm, and no cut makes a sheet wider than the coil it came off. Length is cut to order, so that is the dimension with room in it. Most people here ask in gauge and every mill publishes in millimetres, so give us the millimetres if you have them and the job if you do not.
A sheet is bought on its weight
Weight works out as length in metres times width in metres times thickness in millimetres times 7.85. A square metre of 2 mm sheet is about 15.7 kg and the same square metre at 3 mm is about 23.6 kg, so a millimetre moves the weight and the weight is the bill. Sheet goes out per sheet, by the kilo and by the tonne. Zinc adds mass on GP, so a coated sheet weighs a little over its base steel.

HR, CR aur GP sheet me farak kya hai?
Finish and thickness. HR is hot rolled and black, from about 1.6 mm up, and it takes the heavy work. CR is cold rolled, smooth and thin, down to about 0.25 mm. GP is the galvanised one, zinc coated and flat, from about 0.35 mm. Give us the job and the thickness and we will say which of the three it is.
Bokaro sheet milegi?
Bokaro is a SAIL plant, so what people call Bokaro sheet is SAIL material, and we bill it under SAIL. On galvanised sheet the plant name is worth saying, because SAIL publishes a different thickness band off Bokaro than off Rourkela. Tell us what you have been told to buy and we will tell you what is standing.
Plain sheet aur tina chadra ek hi cheez hai?
No. Tina chadra is corrugated galvanised roofing sheet, sold in roofing profiles and roofing lengths, and it belongs to the roofing rack. GP is that same zinc coating on a flat sheet, bought by workshops for ducting, panels and roofing components. For a shed roof, ask on the roofing side.
