Joist is the I shaped section a shed, a godown or a platform gets carried on once an angle and a channel have stopped being enough. Jay Shree Infra holds it on the heavy rack at its Saharsa godown under three names, SAIL, Shyam Metalics and MC, and our own vehicles take it out to Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura. Twelve nominal depths are ready to quote: 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 and 600 mm. The rest of that rack is on the structural steel page.
Joist is a counter word before it is a section name. SAIL's own tables never print it: they print ISMB for the tapered flange beams and NPB and WPB for the parallel flange ones, all of them against IS 808:2021. Tell us the depth you need and, if your drawing carries one, the series letters as well; both settle which section leaves the rack.
Joist and beam are the same rack, sold by two different words. Ask for beam and the size comes with a series called out, ISMB and a number. Ask for joist and it is the depth that leads, because more than one rolled series can answer to it. Say whichever word your drawing uses, and where it says only joist, give us the depth and the span.
Depths
Twelve depths, and no weight against any of them
Twelve nominal depths are quoted for joist. What is not fixed by depth alone is the mass per metre, the flange width and the web thickness, because more than one rolled section can share a depth. Bring the series letters off the drawing where you have them, ISMB, NPB or WPB with a number; the weight and the flange follow from those. Where the drawing says only joist, give us the depth and the span and we settle the rest on the call.
Kis kaam me lagta hai
Joist goes into buildings, sheds, frames, platforms, warehouses and infrastructure work, and the buyers here are local fabricators, larger fabrication units, thekedars and project construction companies. We sell it by the piece, by the kilo and by the metric tonne; which of the three a load goes on gets fixed at the start of the call.
What a joist has to carry is worked out before it is bought and the shop does not work it out. IS 808 gives a section its dimensions and its properties; the span, the loading and the section that answers them belong to the structural drawing.
One nominal depth, four different sections
SAIL's published tables show what a bare depth leaves out. At a nominal 300 its parallel flange list carries three sections, NPB 300x150 at 36.53, at 42.24 and at 49.32 kg per metre. Its tapered flange list adds MB 300 at 46.02 kg per metre on a 140 mm flange. Four sections behind one number, 12.79 kg per metre between the lightest and the heaviest, and something over 150 kg of steel across a single 12 metre length.
The same spread repeats up and down that list, which is why a joist order asks for letters as well as digits. Turning one of those masses into what a piece weighs is a multiplication by the length, the same arithmetic the sariya weight chart works through for a diameter.
Depth first, series confirmed on the call
Which rolled series answers a given depth, ISMB, NPB or WPB, is what we confirm when you call, because more than one can. Bring the series letters off the drawing if it carries them, and we check what is standing against that exact designation. Where the drawing gives only a depth and a span, tell us the job and we work out which section fits before it is billed.
Black steel, mill lengths, and what rides with it
Joist arrives hot rolled black. It does not come primed or painted, so plan for that as a separate item if the frame needs it. We also stock welding electrodes, cutting and grinding consumables, fasteners, MS and GI pipe, and sheet and plate, so the rest of a fabrication order can go out on the same vehicle.
Mill lengths run about 10 to 12 metres. SAIL's own brochure gives 12 metres for both of its section mills, with other lengths by agreement. Which length a load comes in at is settled on the call.
Brands
Names on the joist rack
Three names reach this rack and one of them says nothing about who rolled the steel. Not every size is in every brand on a given day, so give us the depth with the name when you ring.
MC is the name that reaches this counter and nothing more; who rolls it is not something we put a name to, so we bill it as it comes and stand behind the section, not the label. On tendered work what counts is what is rolled into the steel and what the certificate says. What SAIL prints against these sections
Every mass and every depth here comes off the mill's own tables, headed against IS 808:2021. BIS lists no amendment issued against that standard, so the figures stand as published. No clause of the standard is quoted, only the numbers the mill prints.

Joist ke sawal
ISMB, ISLB aur ISJB me se aapke yahan kya aata hai?
That is worth asking on the call, because more than one series can answer to the same depth. ISLB, ISJB and ISMB are three separate rolled series, and a nominal depth alone does not pick between them. Say the series where your drawing carries one, and the depth with the span where it does not, and we tell you what is standing that morning.
Mistri joist bolta hai aur drawing me ISMB likha hai, dono ek hi hain?
On this rack they land in the same place. ISMB is a designation off a rolled series; joist is the word used at the counter for the same kind of section without naming one. If the drawing says ISMB with a number, that number picks the exact section. If it just says joist, give us the depth and the span and we work out which section answers it.
Naap me joist 350 ka nahi nikla, maal galat aa gaya?
Probably not, because that number is a name and the rolled steel is allowed to sit away from it. SAIL's three NPB 350x170 sections measure 357.6, 360 and 364 mm deep, and its 300s measure 297, 300 and 304. So a pocket cut for a 350 can come up 14 mm short of what turns up in it and nobody has made a mistake. Read us the marking and the section name off the steel before deciding anything is wrong.
Joist par primer ya paint khud lagwana padega?
Plan for it separately. Joist comes hot rolled black, not primed or painted; we stock primer and paint as their own item beside the steel. Tell us what else the frame needs while the section is being settled and it can all travel on one vehicle.
Joist utarwane ke liye site par kya taiyari chahiye?
Room to lay a full length down, and enough people to take the weight off the vehicle. Mill lengths run to about 12 metres, so the turn into the lane matters here before the tonnage does, and it is what picks the tempo, the tractor trolley or the truck. Give us the village and say what the approach is like at the far end. Our own vehicles reach all 34 blocks of Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura, and the cartage for that route is settled at the market rate on the same call.

One number will not fill a joist order
The letters in front of the depth are the part that settles it. ISMB 300 and NPB 300x150x42.24 are two different sections, and a drawing carrying either one turns the whole order into a sentence.
