TMT sariya weight chart: 5.5mm to 32mm

An 8 mm sariya weighs about 0.395 kg per metre, so one 12 metre rod comes to roughly 4.74 kg.

A 12 mm bar works out at 0.889 kg per metre, near enough 10.67 kg a rod. The chart below carries all ten diameters Jay Shree Infra keeps at its Saharsa godown, 5.5 mm to 32 mm. On the rack are SAIL TMT and five more names. Not every diameter is in every brand on a given day, so say the brand with the size when you ring. Three sums do all the work. Diameter times diameter, divided by 162, gives kilograms per metre. That figure times 12 gives one 12 metre rod. 1000 divided by the rod weight gives the rods in a tonne. Every number below follows from the number printed next to it, so a shop calculator lands on the same answer. The sizes and grades themselves sit on the TMT bar (sariya) page.

The rod column assumes a 12 metre straight bar, which is what leaves this counter. IS 1786 fixes no length. SAIL prints Length: 12.0 m over the size table in its own SeQR brochure, and Shyam Steel writes that the standard length of rods is 12 metres. On a cut length or a coil the rod column and the rods per tonne column stop holding, so say which one you are buying when you call.

Kilograms per metre is diameter squared divided by 162, rounded to three decimals. The rod column is that printed figure times 12. The rods column is 1000 divided by the printed rod weight, rounded to the nearest rod, so it answers roughly how many rods a tonne is, not how many rods fit inside one. Those two are different questions and the next table answers the second. The last column is the nominal mass IS 1786:2008 prints in its own Table 1. 5.5 mm has no figure there because the standard lists no such size in any version, so its 0.187 kg per metre is the formula alone.

The 162, and the number underneath it

That divisor is a rounding, not a rule. IS 1786 clause 7.2.1 takes the density of steel at 0.00785 kg per square millimetre of cross section per metre, which is the same as 7850 kg per cubic metre. Work out the area of a round bar at that density and the divisor comes to 162.196. The trade rounded it down to 162 because 162 is easier to divide by on a counter calculator, and dividing by the smaller number puts every figure in the chart about 0.12 percent high.

That is the whole of the gap in the last column. At 12 mm the formula reads 0.889 and the standard's own table says 0.888. At 25 mm it is 3.858 against 3.85. At 6, 8, 10 and 16 mm the two agree to three decimals and there is nothing to argue about. On a ten tonne load of 12 mm the difference is about 11 kg. Keep that number for the next section, because the standard itself allows fifty times more.

What IS 1786 lets a load weigh

A bar is allowed to be lighter than the chart, and legally so. Table 2 of IS 1786 sets the tolerance on nominal mass by size, and it tightens as the bar gets thicker. A batch may run within 7 percent either way up to and including 10 mm, 5 percent over 10 mm and up to 16 mm, and 3 percent above 16 mm. A batch there is the standard's own word, clause 3.1: bars of one size and one grade put up for checking together.

One bar on its own is measured differently. The minus figures are 8, 6 and 4 percent across those same three bands, and the table sets no plus figure at all for a single sample. Clause 7.2.2 makes all of it the default rather than the last word, since a maker and a buyer are free to agree something else between them.

What that does to a tonne of sariya

The batch tolerance for each size, and how many 12 metre rods a tonne holds at either end of it.

These are the most 12 metre rods that still weigh a tonne or less, so the count is taken down to the whole rod rather than rounded, and that is why it differs from the rods column in the chart above. A rod is either inside the tonne or it is not. 5.5 mm is not in this table because IS 1786 does not list the size, so the standard sets no tolerance for it. Supplied to IS 1786 by mutual agreement it would sit in the 7 percent band, which works out at 417 to 480 rods.

A tonne of 8 mm can honestly hold 197 rods or 226 rods, and both loads meet the standard. That is a 29 rod spread, and 8 mm and 10 mm are exactly what a house builder buys. Tata Steel says the same thing beside its own listed rebar weights: they are approximate, and the real weight may vary within BIS tolerance limits.

Put a full load through it. A thousand 12 mm rods come to 10,670 kg on this chart and 10,660 kg on the standard's own nominal mass, so the rounding argument is worth 10 kg. The batch tolerance on that same load is 5 percent, which is 533 kg either way, and a weighbridge ticket anywhere from 10,127 kg to 11,193 kg still meets IS 1786. So where the sale is on weight, weigh it and keep the ticket. The chart tells you what a load ought to weigh, which is worth knowing before a vehicle is sent for it.

At this counter

Per piece or by weight, and why it decides the rate

Sariya goes out per piece and by weight, both. Which one applies depends on the grade, and on how that brand is selling the line to the buyer, so it is settled on the call and never on a chart. A piece rate and a per kilogram rate are not the same number and cannot be compared as though they were. Ask how the size you want is going that day, and fix the rate on the same basis.

Where the deal is made on weight, the weighbridge is the bill and this chart is the estimate. Where it is made per piece, the weight still tells you what to expect on the vehicle. Rates move every day. What we can settle on the phone is the size, the grade, what is standing in the godown this morning and today's rate for it, across the whole sariya rack and all 34 blocks of Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.

About 0.395 kg per metre, so a 12 metre rod is roughly 4.74 kg. The sum is 8 times 8, divided by 162. IS 1786 prints the same 0.395 in its own Table 1, so on this size the trade formula and the standard agree exactly. Mill tolerance still moves the real weight either way, and where the sale is by weight the weighbridge decides.

About 10.67 kg. 12 mm works out at 0.889 kg per metre on the trade formula, and a 12 metre rod is twelve times that. IS 1786 Table 1 says 0.888 for the same bar, which is 10.66 kg a rod. On a thousand rods that difference is 10 kg, and the tolerance the standard allows on the same load is 533 kg.

At 8 mm it is about 211 rods of 12 metres on the chart, and anywhere from 197 to 226 once IS 1786 tolerance is allowed for. At 12 mm it is about 94 on the chart and 89 to 98 in practice. Both ends meet the standard, so count the rods against the weight on the ticket before you sign for the load.

Both. Which one applies depends on the grade, and on how that brand is selling the line that day, so ask on the call and take the rate on the same basis. A piece rate and a kilo rate are not the same number. Call +91 6202 967 218 with the size and the quantity and it is settled in one call.

Two reasons, and they are nowhere near the same size. The formula divides by 162 where the standard's own basis works out at 162.196, which puts the chart about 0.12 percent high. IS 1786 then lets a batch sit 7, 5 or 3 percent off nominal depending on the diameter. The tolerance is the one that shows up on a weighbridge.

What to ask when you ring

Five questions, and every one of them settles something this chart cannot.

  • Is this size going per piece or by weight today?

    It decides which rate you are being quoted, and the two are not comparable. Fix the rate on the same basis you are buying on.

  • If it is by weight, is the bill on the weighbridge or on the chart?

    Use the weighbridge for the bill and keep the theoretical figure for the estimate.

  • Is it 12 metre straight, or a cut length?

    The rod and rods per tonne columns both assume 12 metres. IS 1786 only sets a cutting tolerance on a length that has been specified, plus 75 mm and minus 25 mm.

  • How many pieces come in a bundle of this size, and is the bundle broken?

    No standard fixes it and it moves from mill to mill. Shyam Steel publishes approximate counts for its own 12 metre bars and nobody else's, so this is a question and not a lookup.

  • Is this bundle ISI marked?

    From 8 mm up the Quality Control Order requires the Standard Mark on the bundle and a test certificate carrying it with the consignment. Below 8 mm the Order does not ask for it, so a bare 6 mm or 5.5 mm bundle is not a fault. Ask what the bundle carries rather than reading anything into it.
