Patti is the flat bar a fabricator cuts his frames and fillings from. Jay Shree Infra keeps it at the Saharsa godown in plain steel and galvanised, under the Solar label and under HMB, whose two lines are iGrill in plain steel and Grill Guard on the galvanised side. Every patti is named by two numbers, the width and the thickness in millimetres, so 25x5 mm and 25x6 mm are two separate bars off one rack. Angle, square and round bar share that rack and sit on the structural steel page.

Workshops take most of it, in Saharsa town and out through the blocks, and thekedars and project contractors take it for brackets and clamps on bigger jobs. HMB publishes both its lines at 20 ft and prints their weights per metre, so a patti job gets set out in feet and billed in kilos. Loads leave in our own vehicles for Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.

Sizes and weight

HMB's galvanised patti list, size by size

The ten galvanised sections HMB publishes for Grill Guard, with the weight it prints against each.

SizePublished weight
19x6 mm0.969 kg/m
20x5 mm0.785 kg/m
21x7 mm1.153 kg/m
25x5 mm0.981 kg/m
25x6 mm1.177 kg/m
25x9 mm1.766 kg/m
25x12 mm2.355 kg/m
32x5 mm1.256 kg/m
32x6 mm1.507 kg/m
40x5 mm1.570 kg/m

These ten figures are HMB's own, for Grill Guard, published at 20 ft lengths. Its plain steel iGrill list prints the same weight against every size the two lines share, and the two lines do not carry the same sizes all the way up. What is standing in either of them on a given morning is a phone call.

Kis kaam me lagta hai

Gates and grills first. The frame of a gate, the flat bar running across a window grill, the strips a railing gets braced with: that is what most of the patti leaving this counter is cut into. After those come brackets, clamps, small frames, and the flat pieces a welder tacks on to hold a job square while he finishes it.

It is also the section people ask for by a word that covers two things. Patti means this flat bar, and it means shutter patti as well, the rolled section a rolling shutter is built from, and those are two racks with nothing in common but the name. Shutter work is on the rolling shutter material page. Say gate wali patti or shutter wali patti on the call and one word settles it.

  • Two numbers, and the second one is the bill

Width first, thickness second, both in millimetres. On HMB's published list 25x5 mm is 0.981 kg per metre and 25x6 mm is 1.177, so one millimetre of thickness puts a fifth more steel in the same bar and a fifth more weight on the bill. Patti is sold by kilo, by piece, by bundle and by the metric tonne, and all four run off those same two numbers. A size given as 25 wali patti is half an order.

  • The sum the counter estimates on

Width in millimetres times thickness in millimetres times 0.00785 gives kilograms per metre. It comes off the density of steel and the whole trade estimates on it. Nine of the ten sizes in the table above come out of that sum to three decimals. The tenth does not: HMB prints 0.969 kg per metre against 19x6 mm where the sum gives 0.895, and 19x6 is where most grill work starts. Take the mill's own figure for the mill's own bar. Where the deal is on weight, weigh the load, which is the argument worked through in full in the sariya weight chart.

  • Where the plain list and the galvanised one part

Eight sizes are on both lines at the same published weight: 19x6, 20x5, 21x7, 25x5, 25x6, 25x9, 25x12 and 32x5 mm. Above those the two go different ways. 50x6, 50x10 and 50x12 mm are published on the plain iGrill side, and 32x6 and 40x5 mm on the galvanised Grill Guard side. So a 50 mm patti wanted already galvanised is a question for the phone before it is a size on a slip. Not every size is in every brand on a given day either, and what is in today is the call.

The two names on the patti rack

Patti reaches this godown under the Solar label and under HMB, and HMB arrives as two lines with two finishes. Give us the size with the name and we will say what is standing against it.

Two names, and only one of them tells you anything about who rolled the steel. Where a job needs the material certified, say so at the start of the call, because what a lot carries in the way of marking and papers is worth checking before it is loaded.

Questions

Patti ke sawal

Patti ka weight kaise nikalte hain?

Width in mm times thickness in mm times 0.00785, and the answer is kilograms per metre. A 25x6 mm patti works out at 1.177 kg per metre, which is what HMB prints against it. One 20 ft bar is 6.096 metres, so that piece comes to about 7.2 kg.

Ek hi size ki patti ka weight do jagah alag kyon likha hai?

Because a mill publishes what its own bar weighs and the trade sum publishes what the nominal size works out at. On 19x6 mm HMB prints 0.969 kg per metre and the sum gives 0.895. For a bar bought under a named line, take that line's own figure, and fix the basis of the deal on the call.

Galvanised patti kaun kaun se size me milti hai?

Ten sizes, 19x6 mm up to 40x5 mm, and the table above carries all ten with HMB's weight against each. The three 50 mm flats come on the plain iGrill list. Which of them is in this godown today is answered on the phone.

Patti kitne feet ki aati hai?

HMB publishes both its flat lines at 20 ft, which is 6.096 metres. Shorter pieces come out of that same bar. Tell us the finished lengths and the count and we will say how one full bar breaks up for your job.

Sirf 25 wali patti bol dein to kaam ho jayega?

Not on its own. Twenty five is the width and the thickness is still missing, and on that one width the published list carries 25x5, 25x6, 25x9 and 25x12 mm. The lightest and the heaviest of those four are 0.981 and 2.355 kg per metre, so one order at one width can differ by more than double on weight. Give both numbers, then plain or galvanised, the length, the count and the village.

Thodi si patti chahiye to dukan se le jaa sakte hain?

Yes. The shop, the office and the loading point are one premises, so a few pieces go off the counter with you. Bring something that takes the length, because HMB publishes both its flat lines at 20 ft, which is 6.096 metres, and a full bar will not ride on a bike. Ring before you start out with the width, the thickness and plain or galvanised, and the pieces are counted out before you reach. A bundle or a tonne goes on our own vehicles, and the cartage for that route is quoted on the same call.

Name the patti, then both its numbers

Which patti it is comes first, the flat bar or the shutter lath, because one word covers both here. After that the width and the thickness, plain or galvanised, the length and the count. What is standing against that exact section today comes back on the same call.
