Lenter: chhat dhalai from shuttering to tarai

Lenter is the RCC roof slab, lintel in English and also written linter, and chhat dhalai is that same slab on the day it is being cast. It is the stage of a house build a family here calls out by name, the way they say the house has reached lenter.

A lenter goes up in the same order every time: the shuttering up first, the sariya cut and tied into a cage on top of it, cover blocks under the cage, then the cement mixed and poured in one continuous dhalai, water on the slab for the tarai days, and the shuttering down last. What the material is, is settled well before the mixer arrives. The diameter and the number of bars come off the structural drawing. The cover height comes off the exposure the drawing names. The cement type is the word in the small print on the bag. The day is fixed with whoever is bringing the mixer, and the village decides what the load rides out on. Once concrete starts going in, the cage under it cannot be reached again.

The only figures in the table are day counts, and both sets belong to cement makers whose bags stand on this rack. The tarai spread of 7 to 21 days is what four of them publish between them, Nuvoco at the short end and Shree Cement at the long one for a roof slab in hot or dry weather. The 3 days on a slab bottom and 7 on a beam bottom are Nuvoco's own formwork removal figures, above 15 degrees. Every one of them is a minimum, and a period written on your drawing sits above all of them.

Read the last column down and the same three names keep returning: the drawing, the mistri, and the maker whose bag you bought. Only two of the six stages are settled by anything a shop can sell you, and even those two are settled by the drawing first and the rack second.

The two stages this counter has nothing for are the shuttering and the labour. Ply, planks, props and the man who puts them up are arranged on your own side; what a shuttered cage needs before the pour is the part that comes from here. Shuttering in English is formwork, and dhalai is casting, two words a first time builder hears on the same morning and is rarely given in English.

Before the mixer

Four things fixed early, and none of them fixable later

The diameter and the bar count belong to the structural drawing, and no counter can supply them. How that arithmetic is done for a house of a given size, and why an engineer has to do it, is on the sariya for a 1000 sq ft slab guide.

The cover height comes off the exposure class the drawing names. Cover is the concrete between the steel and the finished face of the member, and IS 456 asks for 20 mm of it in mild exposure and 30 mm in moderate, with larger figures as the exposure gets worse. The block holding that gap is the one item on the order whose entire job is to stay the same height while wet concrete goes in around it, and IS 2502, the code for bending and fixing bars, is what it answers to. The cement type is the word in the statutory block on the bag, OPC, PPC, Portland slag or composite, and it is read against the drawing before anything is mixed. Which of them a reinforced pour may be made with, and the one type kept off it, is on the cement for a roof slab guide.

The fourth is the day itself, and it is the one a shop can actually move. A slab is poured in one continuous go, so a house that runs short of tar at noon has a problem no delivery can fully undo. That is why all of it is counted before the morning and not on it.

At the counter

What a lenter order sounds like at this counter

A lenter order arrives on the phone and it is written down in the same pieces every time. The diameter and the count for the cage, bar by bar. The binding tar and the cover blocks that go with it, because a cage is not a cage until it is tied and stood off the shuttering. The cement type as it reads on the bag, and the bori count against it. The day the mixer comes. And the village the vehicle has to reach, which decides whether the load goes on a tempo, a tractor or a truck.

The sariya and the cement usually leave on two different days, and that is deliberate rather than untidy. Steel can stand on a site for a week while the cage is being cut and tied, so it goes early. Bags are wanted closer to the pour, because cement waiting in a damp corner of a half built house is cement nobody wants to open on the morning of the dhalai. One order, one call, often two vehicles.

Two things are worth saying out on that call even though they are not material. Say the day the mixer is booked for, because that is what the whole load is timed against. And say the village by name rather than the block, since the last stretch of road is what settles the vehicle.

After the mixer stops

Water on top, props still underneath

Tarai starts on the day of the pour and runs somewhere between 7 and 21 days, and which end applies is decided by the bag. Nuvoco prints 7 days. Shree Cement splits its own figure, 7 where the bag reads OPC against 10 to 14 where it reads PPC or PSC, and puts a roof slab in hot or dry weather at 14 to 21. Each of those is a minimum, so the longest of them satisfies the rest. The tarai guide has the period each maker publishes, maker by maker.

The shuttering comes down on a separate clock. Nuvoco puts the vertical shuttering of a column, a wall or a beam side at 16 to 24 hours, a slab bottom at 3 days with the props put back at once, and a beam bottom at 7 days, all of that above 15 degrees. So there is a stretch where water is standing on top and props are still holding underneath, and tarai is not a pause in the work. Whatever goes up after the slab reaches a site that is running, which is why the next delivery is worth fixing on the lenter call itself.

Yes, a slab is cast in one continuous pour. Concrete stopped overnight and restarted the next morning leaves a joint running through the slab, and the cage under the finished half cannot be reached again. That is why the tar, the blocks and every bori are counted before the day rather than on it.

    Read them off the drawing bar by bar. That count is the engineer's and it comes with you to the call; nothing at this end can work it out for your slab.

  • What cover is written against the slab?

    The block height follows that figure. IS 456 allows the actual cover to run over the nominal one and nothing under it, so a short block is the one mistake that cannot be corrected once the concrete is in.

  • Does the bag have to read OPC, PPC, slag or composite?

    The drawing names it and the small print on the bag confirms it. Say the word on the call and we tell you which of them is standing that morning.

  • How many bori, and is the tar and block count in with them?

    Tar and cover blocks are small items that get remembered last and missed first. They ride out on the same vehicle as the bags, so they belong on the same call.

  • Which day is the mixer booked for?

    Everything is timed against that date. Steel can go days ahead of it, cement is better off arriving near it, and the tarai count starts from it.

  • Which village, and what does the last stretch of road take?

    Name the village rather than the block. Tempo, tractor or truck is decided by that last stretch, and it is decided before the load is made up, not after.
