Tar is the soft wire a mistri twists at every crossing of a reinforcement cage before the concrete goes in. Jay Shree Infra keeps MS binding wire at the Saharsa godown, sold by the kilo and by the coil, and it leaves on the same vehicle as the sariya for Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura. The tar here bills under two names: Tata Tiscon and Local. The wire behind both labels is mild steel drawn to IS 280:2006, the Indian Standard for mild steel wire for general engineering purposes.
A tar order turns on two numbers and neither of them is a section size. One is the wire diameter, which the standard works in millimetres and the counter asks for in gauge. IS 280 covers mild steel wire from 0.125 mm to 12.5 mm diameter, and allows sizes outside that by agreement between buyer and maker. The diameter and the coil weight change with the pack that is standing, so confirm both when you ring.
Kis kaam me lagta hai
Tar ties the cage. Every lap and every crossing in a footing, a column, a beam and a slab takes a twist of it before the shuttering closes, and the same coil ties the shuttering and holds cover blocks where they were put. The mistri tying that cage knows how many kilos the job will eat, and he is usually not the man who costed it.
Whoever is buying sariya is buying tar: thekedars running a dhalai, home builders doing one floor at a time, builders, project companies, road and bridge work. Tender work asks more of the coil than a house does, because there the marking on it and the paper with it have to stand up.
Gauge is what people say, millimetres is what the standard uses
Give us the diameter in millimetres wherever the mistri has written one down, and the gauge where he has not. Gauge is an old wire scale, it gets read two ways across a counter, and IS 280 does not use it: the standard runs on millimetre diameters, 0.125 mm up to 12.5 mm, with anything outside supplied by agreement. Black annealed and galvanised are two different orders
IS 280 leaves the finish to the buyer and lists several: annealed, bright drawn, dry drawn, galvanized, coppered, tinned. For tying a cage the trade takes the annealed wire, the soft black one. Galvanized binding wire under the same standard is a separate thing with a coating test behind it, and BIS licenses it as a separate finish, so say which one you want before a coil is opened.
The soft wire is soft because the standard makes it prove it. Under 5 mm diameter the wire has to come through a wrapping test, wound round a mandrel and straightened out again without breaking or splitting; at 5 mm and above it takes a bend test instead. That is the property you are buying when you buy tar.
On tar the Quality Control Order carries no size carve-out
Mild steel wire to IS 280:2006 sits at serial number 35 of Schedule 1 of the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, with immediate effect and with no size left out. So the ISI Standard Mark belongs on this wire under a BIS licence, and a test certificate carrying the same mark travels with the consignment. Sariya is looser: the same Order writes sizes under 8 mm out of its serial number 11, which is why a 6 mm bundle can arrive unmarked and still be right. Tar has no such gap to explain.
The standard also asks the coil itself to carry the finish, the size, the lot number and the maker's name or trade mark. Check those four against the coil in your hand and the certificate that comes with it before it goes on tender work. How much tar a job takes is worked off the steel tonnage, and the sariya weight chart turns diameters and lengths into that figure.

Tar reaches this counter under two labels and only one belongs on a brand wall. The coil bills as Tata Tiscon here, though Tata Steel's published wire brand is Tata Wiron, whose listed lines include binding; Tiscon is Tata's reinforcement name, and it stays billed as it arrives. The second label is Local, a market word with no company behind it, which is why it stays off this wall.

Kala tar lein ya galvanised?
For tying a cage the trade takes the black annealed wire, the soft one. Galvanized binding wire is a separate finish under the same standard, with its own coating test. The two do not stand in for each other, so say which one you want on the call and we will read out what is on the floor.
Tar par ISI mark zaroori hai kya?
Yes. Serial number 35 of the Quality Control Order covers this wire with no size excluded, so the mark belongs on it under a BIS licence and a certificate carrying the same mark comes with the consignment. Ask us what the coil in the godown is carrying before it goes on tender work.
Tata Tiscon ka hi tar milega?
Tata Tiscon is the name tar bills under here, and Local is the other label. That billed name and the word Tata publishes on its own wire are two different words, and the note under the brand above says why. Sariya ke order ke saath tar bhi aa jayega?
Yes, and that is how it nearly always goes. One coil will not fill a vehicle and nobody books a trip for it, so it rides the load the sariya or the cement is already making up. The vehicle is ours and it is coming to your block anyway, and the carriage follows the route at the market rate. Name the kilos while the steel is being booked, before the load is tied down.
