Sariya is the ribbed bar that goes inside the shuttering before a slab is poured. Jay Shree Infra keeps it at the Saharsa godown in ten diameters, 5.5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 28 and 32 mm, in Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550, Fe 550D and Fe 600. SAIL TMT is our first pick, with Tata Tiscon, Shyam Steel, Balmukund TMT, Alaknanda TMT and Solar TMT on the rack beside it. Footings, foundations, columns, beams and slabs come off one rack, and the load leaves in our own vehicles for Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.
A 12 metre straight bar is what leaves this counter. The mills set that figure and the standard does not: it is printed over SAIL's own SeQR size table, and Shyam Steel gives the same twelve for its rods. Nothing in IS 1786 fixes a length. The weight column is the trade formula, diameter squared divided by 162. Work the standard's own density through instead and 162.196 comes out under the line, which puts every figure here about 0.12 percent high. Against 5.5 mm the 0.187 kg per metre is formula and nothing else, because the standard lists no such size.
Kis kaam me lagta hai
The same bar goes into foundations, columns, beams, slabs and footings, and out of the district into road and bridge work. Thekedars running a dhalai, home builders doing one floor at a time, builders, project companies and tender supply all draw from the same stock. Tender and project work has to match the approved make and carry an MTC with the load.
Which diameter and which grade a job takes is the structural drawing's call, not the shop's. IS 1786 says what the bar has to be; it carries no rule for a slab, a column or a footing. Bring the numbers off the drawing to the call and we will tell you what is on the floor against them.
What the D adds, and what it does not
Fe 500 and Fe 500D have the same minimum yield, 500 N/mm2. The difference is stretch. On the current IS 1786 table Fe 500 has to reach 12.0 percent elongation and Fe 500D 16.0 percent, at that same minimum yield. So D buys give, not strength. Same steel, more stretch before it breaks.
We keep Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550, Fe 550D and Fe 600. Project grade is a buying category. There is no Fe grade of that name. Where a tender says project grade, read the specification for the Fe number it actually asks for.
The ISI mark, and the two sizes it does not reach
TMT bar in India is made to IS 1786. The Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024 makes the ISI mark compulsory on it, except for sizes less than 8 mm. From 8 mm up the mark belongs on the bundle under a BIS licence. A certified consignment travels with a test certificate carrying that same mark, the cast or lot number, the grade, the size and the test results. Below 8 mm the Order does not ask for it.
6 mm is a size IS 1786 lists, so a mill may hold the mark on it. 5.5 mm is a trade size the standard does not list at all. A 6 mm bundle can come without the mark and still be right. Ask us what that bundle is carrying.
Two other markings travel with every load and buyers mix all three up. On licensed bar the maker's name, the grade and a six digit BIS number are rolled into the steel at intervals of not more than 3 metres. You can read all three off the bar itself. The bundle also carries a tag with the cast or lot number, the grade and the size, whether or not the ISI mark is on it.
Why the chart is not the bill
Take the table as an estimate and the weighbridge as the bill. Tolerance is what separates them. A 12 metre 32 mm rod may legally run about 2.28 kg off nominal. The rounded divisor is worth about 0.09 kg on that same rod. Weigh anything bought on weight, and keep the ticket. Per piece or by weight, ask on the call
Ask which basis that diameter is on the day you ring. Both are used here. The answer turns on the grade and on how that name is being sold, so it is settled on the phone. Bundles are the same kind of question: nothing fixes the count, it differs mill to mill, and we will tell you what that bundle holds and what it weighs. Sariya brands on the rack
SAIL TMT is the line we reach for first, and which diameters are standing changes week to week, so name the size and the grade on the call. These are the names beside it.
Eight names, and not every diameter is in every brand on a given day. Local TMT, project grade and Durgapur TMT get asked for by name here too, and so does Solar TMT. Durgapur is a place and project grade is a buying category, both trade words rather than a maker's name. Say the size and the grade with whichever name you use, and we will tell you what is standing.

Kaun sa brand kaun se size me milta hai?
Name the brand and the diameter in the same breath and we will say what is on the floor against it. Six names sit on this rack, and which of them a diameter is standing in that morning is settled on the call. Say the brand with the size on 5.5 mm too and we will tell you what is in. For tender work say the approved make as well, because that narrows the answer before anything else does.
Ek bundle me kitne piece aate hain?
It depends on the diameter and on the mill, and no standard fixes it. IS 1786 says nothing about bundling, so the count moves from maker to maker at the same size. Tell us the diameter and we will say how that bundle comes, what it weighs, and whether one is open that day.
Fe 500 aur Fe 500D me kya farak hai?
Same minimum yield, more stretch. IS 1786 asks 500 N/mm2 of both, then 12.0 percent elongation from Fe 500 and 16.0 percent from Fe 500D. D is not a stronger bar. Which one your job takes is on the structural drawing, so bring that number to the call.
ISI mark kahan dekhein?
On 8 mm and above, look for the mark on the bundle. Then ask for the test certificate that carries the same mark, with the cast number, the grade and the size. On the bar itself, licensed material has the maker's name, the grade and a six digit BIS number rolled in every 3 metres. Below 8 mm the Quality Control Order does not require the mark, so its absence on a 5.5 mm or 6 mm bundle proves nothing. Ask us what that bundle is carrying.
Order karne ke liye kya batana hoga?
Five things: the diameter, the grade, whose name you want rolled on it, how many tonnes or how many pieces, and the village. Tendered work adds two more, the approved make and whether an MTC has to travel with the load. Twelve metre lengths do not turn every corner, so the approach road decides the vehicle. Cement, binding wire and cover blocks ride on the same trip.
