Sariya
Sariya is the ribbed steel rod that goes into a slab, a column or a footing before the concrete is poured, and in this bazaar it means TMT bar and nothing else.

Say sariya anywhere between Saharsa and Nirmali and everybody means the same thing: the ribbed 12 metre rod that comes tied in a bundle, gets cut and bent on site, and is wired into a cage before the dhalai. Nobody says reinforcement bar at the counter and very few say TMT. The word carries the size with it, so a mistri asks for barah number sariya and means 12 mm.
It is sold two ways here, per piece and by weight, and which one a line is going on that day moves with the grade and with the brand. That is why the size, the grade and the basis all get said out on the same call. Smooth round rod is not sariya in local speech; that is called round bar or gol sariya, and it does not carry the ribs that grip the concrete.
How it is said at the counter
Barah number sariya, do bandal, Sonbarsha tak bhijwa dijiye.
Twelve millimetre TMT bar, two bundles, delivered to Sonbarsha. Three of the five things an order needs are already in that sentence; what is still missing is the grade and whether the deal is on piece or on weight.
