A structure is not one product, it is six jobs, and each job pulls from a different rack. Below is which rack answers which job, what a published godown design says about it in words, and what this counter needs to know before it sequences the order. No particular PACS society or godown is named here; a design belongs to its own engineer, and what follows maps what stands behind it, not the drawing itself.

Role and category are this shop's own way of sorting the eight racks against a shed's frame; the government's own published godown designs describe the roles in words rather than as a shopping list. NABARD's Model Scheme for Setting Up Rural Godown puts the roof on single span structural steel or tubular trusses, fixed on RCC, stone masonry or brick masonry pillars. The Central Warehousing Corporation's own engineering specification for a conventional godown names a precoated GI or Galvalume roof sheet built to IS 277 over tubular trusses on RCC columns, brick or RR masonry walls in cement mortar, and rolling shutters or steel garage doors at the loading bay. Neither document is written for a small PACS-sized shed and neither is quoted here for a size; what a particular shed needs is a drawing, not a paragraph.

A steel-frame shed and a masonry-and-truss godown pull from different rows of this table for the same two roles, column and wall, and that choice is usually made before the first order is placed. What stays constant across both is the roof, the truss and the shutter, because a grain store needs the same clear span and the same wide opening whichever way its walls and columns go up.

The table names which rack a role draws from. The size, the grade and the count are a drawing and a phone call, because a 50 MT store and a 500 MT one pull very different amounts from the same six rows.

Below the floor

The foundation and the column carry everything above them

The Central Warehousing Corporation's own specification for a conventional godown puts plain cement concrete under both the column footings and the panel walls, with brick or random rubble masonry in cement mortar above it, and reinforced cement concrete for the columns and the tie beam running around the walls at eave height. NABARD's separate scheme for a smaller rural godown keeps the plinth about 80 cm above the finished ground level and asks for a damp proof course at that level, so the floor stays dry above the surrounding earth.

Where the column is RCC, the reinforcement is TMT bar, tied and spaced to the site engineer's own design, and every bar of 8 mm and above carries the ISI Standard Mark under a BIS licence. SAIL SeQR is our first pick where a drawing names a brand of TMT, and the cement for the concrete around it comes off the same rack whichever grade the mix calls for. Where the column is steel, channel, joist, MS pipe or GI pipe stands on an MS plate base bolted into the same RCC footing, and the choice between an RCC column and a steel one belongs to the engineer.

The clear span

The truss carries the roof, and the roof is where the designs agree

NABARD's model scheme puts the roof on single span structural steel or tubular trusses, fixed on RCC, stone masonry or brick masonry pillars, at a stated height of 5.60 m from the floor to the tie level on a road fed godown. The Central Warehousing Corporation's own conventional design uses the same tubular truss on RCC columns and adds a wind figure to it: a truss built to the wind speed zone printed in the relevant BIS code, 33 to 55 metres a second depending on the location.

The angle, MS pipe and GI pipe that make a truss come off our structural steel and pipe racks, cut and drilled to a fabricator's drawing. The base plates and gusset plates at the joints are cut from MS plate or GP sheet the same way. What sits on the truss is the roof sheet itself, and the Corporation's own bill of quantities names it precisely: a precoated galvanised iron sheet of 0.55 mm total coated thickness with 120 grams of zinc per square metre, built to IS 277, the same standard behind the ISI mark on the GC and colour-coated sheet we sell. A small share of the roof, about 2 percent on the Corporation's own design, goes over in fibre sheet instead, to bring daylight into the floor below.

The wall and the loading bay

A masonry wall or a sheeted one, and a shutter wide enough for the vehicle

NABARD's scheme asks for the wall design to follow general masonry practice, brick or stone in cement mortar, built to keep its tensile stress within the cracking limit. The Central Warehousing Corporation's own design uses 23 cm brick or 38 cm random rubble masonry in cement mortar for the same wall. A steel-frame shed more often runs the roof sheet straight down the wall instead of building it in brick, and where that is the choice, the same GC sheet or colour-coated sheet stocked for the roof does the wall too.

The loading bay is where the vehicle meets the store, and the Corporation's own specification describes a rolling shutter of interlocked mild steel laths on a pipe shaft, wound by a set of wire springs, though its more recent designs use a steel garage door in the same opening instead. The shutter profile, the guide channel on each side and the spring inside the shaft are the three parts we stock for the rolling shutter version; a steel garage door is a fabricated item and goes through the same fabricator building the truss.

What we settle before an order, and what a drawing settles first

Nothing above is a design; it is where each part of a design comes from once one exists. A grain godown's column spacing, footing depth, truss section and shutter width all follow the span, the capacity and the soil the structure stands on, and those numbers belong to the site's own engineer before they belong to an order here.

Bring the drawing, or the span and the capacity if the drawing is not ready yet, and we work out which racks the job draws from and in what order the loads should leave for it. Cement, TMT bar and cover block for what goes into the ground first; channel, MS pipe and GC sheet for what stands up after it; shutter parts last, for the bay the grain actually moves through.

An RCC column pulls TMT bar and cement off our racks; a steel column pulls channel, joist or MS pipe on an MS plate base instead.

A precoated GI or Galvalume sheet built to IS 277 is what the Central Warehousing Corporation's own specification names for a conventional godown roof, and both our GC sheet and colour-coated sheet meet that same standard on the steel underneath. About 2 percent of the roof going over in fibre sheet for daylight is the Corporation's own figure, where a design wants natural light on the floor.

The loading bay needs an opening wide enough for the vehicle, and the Corporation's own specification describes it as a rolling shutter of interlocked laths on a pipe shaft, though newer designs use a steel garage door in the same opening instead. We stock the shutter profile, guide and spring for the rolling shutter version; a garage door is fabricated separately.

Each one decides which of the eight racks the next load comes off.

  • Is the column RCC or steel?

    An RCC column pulls TMT bar and cement; a steel column pulls channel, joist or MS pipe on an MS plate base. Both stand on the same RCC footing, so the foundation order does not wait on this answer, the frame order does.

  • What is the span and the storage capacity?

    The truss section and the roof sheet count both follow the clear span; NABARD's own scheme sorts godowns from 50 MT small stores up to 2000 MT and above, and the frame gets heavier at every step.

  • Is the roof going up in GC sheet or colour-coated sheet, and does it need a daylight strip?

    Both meet IS 277 on the steel underneath; the choice between them is a separate question answered on the roofing rack, and a fibre sheet strip is worth naming now if the design wants natural light over the floor.

  • Is the wall going up in masonry or in sheet?

    A masonry wall pulls cement and nothing off the roofing rack; a sheeted wall pulls the same GC or colour-coated sheet as the roof, so the two orders can go out together.

  • How wide is the loading bay, and how many are there?

    The shutter profile, guide and spring are ordered to the opening's own width; a wider bay or more than one opening changes the count, not the parts.
