MS pipe is black pipe: mild steel tube with nothing on the outside of it, no zinc and no paint. Jay Shree Infra holds it at the Saharsa godown as round tube, and also as the square and rectangular hollow sections a shed frame is built out of, under the names Satyam, Tata Pipes, Kamdhenu Pipes, BST Infrasteel, Baba Ispat and Cognigent. Shed columns and trusses, gate and grill frames, scaffolding and workshop benches all come off this one rack, and our vehicles carry it into Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.

Round pipe and square section are two different orders, not one order in two shapes. A round pipe is called out by its nominal bore and its class, under IS 1239 (Part 1). A square or rectangular section is called out by its two outside sides and its wall, under IS 4923, and it carries no class at all. The galvanised half of the same rack sits on the MS and GI pipes page.

Published byStandardSize rangenominal bore
Tata PipesIS 123915 to 150 NB

This is a maker's published figure, not a stock list. BIS's own licence scope for IS 1239 (Part 1) runs to the same 150 mm nominal bore, in light, medium and heavy class. The same maker publishes 200 to 600 NB against IS 3589, which is project material. Which bore and which wall is standing this morning is the call.

Kis kaam me lagta hai

Shed and godown work takes the most of it here: columns, trusses, bracing and purlin supports on PACS godowns, warehouses, workshops and farm sheds. Then gates and grills, where the pipe makes the frame and angle, flat and square bar fill it in. Scaffolding, furniture frames and machine stands take the rest.

Which section and which wall a shed frame takes is the fabricator's design and the shop does not decide it. Bring his section list to the call and we will read it against what is standing. When a shed frame and its roof are going up in the same week, sheet, purlins and girts go out on the same vehicle.

  • The letter on the pipe is the class

A licensed round pipe tells you what it is without your having to take anybody's word for it. BIS's own product manual for IS 1239 (Part 1) puts the maker's name or trade mark, the standard number and the class letter, L for light, M for medium, H for heavy, embossed along the tube at intervals of about a metre, with the Standard Mark on the outside of each tube. Read it off the steel before the load goes on.

Classes carry colour bands too, painted at the works before the tubes leave it. Which colour matches which class is on the standard's own clause list rather than something to guess by eye, so confirm it with us on the call.

  • A square section has a wall, not a class

Ask for medium in a square section and there is nothing to hand you: the class idea belongs to round pipe under IS 1239. Hollow sections come under IS 4923, which designates them by the two outside dimensions and the wall thickness, cold formed or hot formed, in grades written YSt 210 and upward. A square section is ordered as 50 by 50 by 2, and that third figure is the whole of the question.

For the spread on one published line, Tata gives its retail Structura square sections in YSt 210 from 20 by 20 up to 150 by 150, in walls of 1.2 mm to 5 mm. Other makers publish their own.

  • What travels with the bundle, and why tender work wants it

Every bundle carries a durable metal or plastic tag, and the BIS product manual lists what goes on it: the class and the process of manufacture, the source, the size, a batch number, and the licence number in its CM/L form. A consignment of certified material travels with a test certificate carrying the same Standard Mark, the cast or control unit number, the class, the size and the test results.

One control unit is all the tube of one size, one grade and one class made on one mill in a shift of eight hours or less. That is how fine a batch number cuts it. Say on the call that the job is tendered and we will tell you what that bundle came in with.

  • Piece, bundle, kilo or tonne

MS pipe leaves this counter on four bases: piece, bundle, kilo and metric tonne. Which one your line is on the day you ring turns on the section and on how that name is moving, so fix the basis before the figure. Two pipes of the same bore in two classes do not weigh the same, because the wall is where the steel sits. Ring +91 6202 967 218, give us the shape, the size, the wall and how much, and the figure for that exact pipe comes back on the same call.

Brands

Names that come through the pipe rack

None of these carries our Shop's Pick tag. Which one you end up with is decided by what is actually on the floor in the section and the wall your job needs, and that answer moves from week to week.

Two of these six, Baba Ispat and Cognigent, carry no named mill behind them. Cognigent is spelled the way it bills here, and that spelling has never been tied to a maker, so for project work, go by the marking rolled into the pipe and tell us what that says. Satyam Steel, Kamdhenu and Tata publish their pipe ranges themselves; BST Infrasteel supplies and distributes steel. Not every size is in every brand on a given day.

Questions

MS pipe ke sawal

Pipe par L, M ya H ka matlab kya hai?

Light, medium and heavy class, under IS 1239 (Part 1). Same bore, different class, different wall thickness, so the letter is half the order. Bring whichever letter your mistri wrote down and we will check it against the floor.

Chaukor pipe me light, medium, heavy hota hai kya?

No, and there is no equivalent of it under IS 4923. A hollow section is ordered as 40 by 40 by 2 or 60 by 40 by 2.6, two outside sides and a wall, with a grade such as YSt 210 where the drawing names one. Give us all three figures.

MS pipe par ISI mark kaise pehchanein?

On a BIS licensed tube the Standard Mark is embossed on the outside surface, and the bundle tag carries the licence number in its CM/L form. Ask for the test certificate as well, and check with us on the call whether it is required for your size and job.

Chhote pipe ka batch number kahan likha rehta hai?

On the bundle tag. BIS's product manual asks for the batch number on the tube itself only from 25 mm NB upward, by embossing, stencilling, transfix label or etching; at 20 mm NB and below it goes on the tag tied to the bundle. So once a small bundle is broken open the tag is the only traceability left. Keep it where the work is tendered.

MS pipe ka order dete waqt kya kya batana hoga?

Six things: round or square or rectangular, the size across it, the wall thickness, the length, the brand if the job names one, and how much. Add the class letter on round pipe, and the grade on a hollow section, where the drawing gives them. Say the village at the same time, because the approach road decides the vehicle.

Read the tube before you order more of it

A length already lying at the site carries the maker's name, the standard number and the class letter embossed along it about a metre apart, and a bundle still tied carries the tag with the licence number on it. Read those out and the second lot matches the first without an argument at the welding stage. Where nothing is on site yet, say round or square, the size across, the wall and the length.
