A rolling shutter runs on two of these, one down each side of the doorway. The guide channel is the upright the ends of the laths sit inside, and it is what holds the curtain square while it goes up and comes down. Jay Shree Infra keeps it at the Saharsa godown in MS black and in galvanised GI, under the Solar label and in HMB's two lines, and it goes out on our own vehicles to Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.

The lath is cut across the opening and the guide is cut up it, so this order starts at the clear height and the width never enters it. Guide channel reaches us in straight stock lengths and is cut down to that height at the counter. The shutter patti and the spring that finish the same doorway are beside it on the rolling shutter rack.

Sizes

Where a guide's width and depth come from

A guide has to hold the curtain that runs in it, so its width and depth follow the shutter and the load the curtain carries. No published chart covers guide channel by that name; we measure against the doorway and the shutter, not against a printed size.

The nearest published figure is a cousin, not this section: HMB prints a gate channel in both its lines, 20x10x2 mm at 0.82 kg per metre and 20x10x3 mm at 0.86, made for a collapsible gate. We stock the same two sections here for shutter guide work as well, with the fit confirmed before it leaves the counter. Grill Guard's page gives 20 ft as the length its sections come in.

Kis kaam me lagta hai

Rolling shutter side guides is the one job this section does. Fabrication workshops large and small, thekedars and the project companies working to a drawing are who buy it, because the guide goes in with the shutter and the shutter is hung by whoever built it.

An order needs six things: material, size, thickness, length, brand and quantity. Four of those exist only once a doorway is measured, so give us the height and the shutter and we take the fit from there.

  • Three sections carry the word channel

Guide channel is one of them. The gate channel is HMB's 20x10 section, the one the figures above come off, and it is made for a collapsible gate. The structural channel is the C section a shed frame and a godown door frame are built from, and its lightest designation is 7.14 kg per metre against well under one for the gate section. One word, three sections, and the weight between them is the difference between a doorway and a shed.

  • The height, doubled, is the running length

A doorway takes a guide down each side, so the running length in an order is the clear height twice over. How far it then has to carry above the lintel to reach the shaft is the workshop's own number off its own drawing, so say whether the height you are giving us is the clear opening or the full run.

This section sells by the piece, by running length and by weight. Fix which of the three your order stands on before you take a figure, or two quotations for one doorway will not compare. Ring +91 6202 967 218 and say which of the three you want the answer on.

  • Black, galvanised, or coated after it is up

Black steel, galvanised, and painted or powder coated: three finishes this section comes in. Black leaves here bare and the coat is the workshop's last job on the shutter. GI arrives galvanised. HMB runs the two as separate lines, iGrill plain and Grill Guard galvanised, with the same two sections and the same two weights against both, so what is being chosen there is the coating and the section stays where it was. Neither line publishes a coating weight in gsm or in microns, so we quote none and hand you the piece.

  • IS 6248 is written for the shutter, and its mark is voluntary

The Indian Standard for a finished rolling shutter is IS 6248, the first revision of 1979, carrying one amendment, drawn up by the BIS committee for doors, windows and shutters. BIS lists certification for it as voluntary, so no ISI mark is required on a rolling shutter or on the guide inside one, and a section that arrives without the mark is not short of anything the law asks for.

The standard is written for the built shutter. What leaves this godown is the section it gets built from, and the test that section has to pass is the fit.

The names this section comes in

Solar and HMB, and on this section the difference is mostly in how each is published. Name the one your workshop has been using and we will hold it against the floor.

Not every size is in every brand on a given day, and on this section the day's answer is a measurement before it is a name. Ask for HMB's galvanised guide as Grill Guard Sul, or simply say galvanised HMB: both point to the same line. Solar, HMB and a local supplier all answer to this section, and each is settled with a tape measure before it is settled by name.

Questions

Guide channel ke sawal

Guide channel ka naap kahan se aata hai?

Off the shutter and off the doorway, not off a chart. A guide's width, depth and thickness are supplier specific, and no maker we can cite publishes a shutter guide size at all. Where an old guide is coming down keep a piece of it, and where the curtain exists already keep one lath back. The answer comes from holding the two together.

Ek shutter ke liye kitni lambai chahiye?

Twice the clear height, and then whatever runs above the lintel to reach the shaft. The guide stands down both sides of the opening, so the height is what gets doubled and the width plays no part. We cut from straight stock lengths, and HMB's galvanised line runs 20 ft.

Guide channel GI me bhi milta hai?

Yes, galvanised as well as black. This section comes in three finishes: black steel, galvanised, and painted or powder coated, the same split HMB runs as iGrill plain and Grill Guard galvanised. Neither publishes a coating figure, so we quote none and tell you what the piece in front of us is.

Guide channel par ISI mark nahi hai to chalega?

It will. IS 6248 is the standard a finished rolling shutter is made to, and BIS lists certification for it as voluntary, so nothing here has to carry the mark. What settles the job is the steel, the thickness and the fit, and all three are read off the section with it in hand.

Guide, patti aur spring ek hi gaadi me aa jayenge?

Yes, one load takes the lot, in our own vehicles, to all 34 blocks of Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura. Say the village and what the last stretch of road is like, because a full stock length decides the vehicle long before the weight does. Carriage is charged at the market rate.

Give us the height and what the guide has to hold

Two numbers travel with this order and both are at your end: the clear height of the opening and how many shutters. The third thing is the fit, so say on the same call whether the curtain is already rolled or still to be made. Everything else in a shutter moves. The guide is the part that stays bolted to the building, so it answers to the wall and to the lath at once.
