Jay Shree Infra hears sariya ordered in sut about as often as in millimetres, because sut is the eighth an old tape still marks and a fabricator's hand already knows it. IS 1786 lists 22 mm as one of its own nominal sizes, and 7 sut lands almost exactly on it at 22.225 mm. 22 mm is not one of the ten diameters standing on this rack, though, so no weight is printed for that row, and the two bars either side of it, 20 mm and 25 mm, are the ones actually in stock. The mm column is the sut count multiplied by 3.175, rounded to two decimals; it is arithmetic, not a stocked size on its own. The bar column is the nearest diameter IS 1786 actually rolls, and the weight columns are the same figures the sariya weight chart already publishes for that bar. 22 mm, the bar 7 sut lands nearest to, is not one of the ten diameters this rack keeps, so its weight columns are blank rather than guessed; 20 mm and 25 mm sit either side of it and both are in regular stock.

Sut is a bazaar unit. The dictionary knows it as an old builder's measure; on a tape in this trade it is an eighth of an inch, eight sut to the inch, and it never appears on a drawing or a bill. Both of those run in millimetres, because IS 1786 itself is written in millimetres and every rolling mill cuts to a millimetre size, not an inch fraction. So 4 sut on a mistri's list means 12.7 mm on paper, and at the counter it becomes the 12 mm bar, not a bar cut to 12.7 mm exactly, because IS 1786 rolls no such size.
The standard's own nominal sizes near the sut ladder are 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 22, 25 and 32 mm, and every sut size in the table above rounds to the nearest one of those. 6 mm and 5.5 mm sit outside the size the Quality Control Order marks compulsory, which starts at 8 mm, so a 2 sut bundle with no ISI mark on it is not a fault at that diameter.
