How to compare material quotes
Two quotes compare only when they stand on the same unit, the same size and the same length, and one piece is a different length on every line: 20 feet on an HMB iGrill section, 12 metres on a sariya rod.

A number settles nothing until you know what it is a number for. Sariya sells by the piece, by the bundle, by the kilo and by the tonne; cement by the bag and by the tonne; chadra by the sheet, by the square foot and by the kilo; tar by the kilo and by the coil. The order sheet here asks seven things against a sariya order: the brand, the grade, the diameter, the quantity, the project or tender specification, whether an MTC has to ride with the load, and where it is going. A paper answering three of those seven can be held against a paper answering five only by guessing at the rest.
The lengths
What one piece is, line by line
The length four makers publish for their own lines, and the same figure in feet.

One foot is 0.3048 metre exactly, so the feet column is each published figure turned over at that rate and rounded to one decimal. Twenty feet works out at 6.10 m, which puts a 12 metre rod at very nearly two HMB lengths end to end. Everest publishes seven lengths for one sheet, 1.50, 1.75, 2.0, 2.25, 2.75, 3.0 and 3.6 m, and the row carries the two ends of that list.
Four unlike things sit in that first column. HMB iGrill is the MS flat, square, round and angle a grill or a gate gets welded out of. The Tata Pipes row is the plumbing line, 15, 20 and 25 NB. Shyam Steel there is sariya. Everest is a fibre cement roof sheet.
A per piece figure carries a length inside it and never prints it. Put every piece into feet, or into kilos where the section has a published mass, and two papers start saying things that can be held side by side.
First question
Which basis is the figure on
Sariya is sold both ways at this counter, by the piece and by weight, and which one applies turns on the grade and on how that name is being sold that day. So the basis is settled on the phone and never off a page. A per piece figure and a per kilo figure meet through the weight of one rod, and those weights, with the arithmetic under them, are on the sariya weight chart.
The rest of the rack splits the same way. Chadra is quoted by the sheet, by the square foot or by the kilo, and those three agree only once the cover width and the length are fixed. An angle or a flat goes by the kilo or by the piece, a GI pipe by the piece, the kilo or the bundle. Cement is the steady one, because a bori is a bori, and even there the net weight comes off the sack and not off the paper.
The name
A word on the invoice does not name a mill
Durgapur is a place. It tells you where a mill stands and nothing about whose steel is in the bundle, and this shop bills it under that name because the trade does too, on the Durgapur TMT page. Eight of the names we bill under work the same way, with no maker anybody at the counter can put behind them.
So two quotes carrying two of those names may be one mill's steel or two mills', and neither paper says which. The bar itself and the bundle tag do. Ask for both to be read out while the paper is still in your hand.
The mark
What the mark can and cannot settle on a quote
On sariya of 8 mm and above the Standard Mark is compulsory under the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order of 2024, and a test certificate carrying that same mark travels with the consignment. Below 8 mm the Order does not reach. A lower figure against an unmarked 6 mm bundle therefore proves nothing about the steel, and a missing mark on 5.5 mm is no fault at all. Where a tender names an approved make, the comparison narrows again. A figure for a make the specification does not carry has undercut nothing; it has answered a different order.
Outside the number
Three things a quote can leave out
Whether GST is inside the figure or comes on top of it, which is worth asking in those words; the firm's GST number is on the credentials page. Whether the figure is off the godown or delivered to your site, because we run our own vehicles, tempo up to truck, and charge for them at the market rate of the day. And what the approach to the site will take, since a 12 metre rod does not turn every corner.
A figure is also a day. Rates move here day to day, so a number taken one morning and a number taken the next week are two mornings and not a comparison. Take both on the same day, on the same unit, for the same brand and grade; what survives that is a real difference. The rest of the flow, from the call to the unloading, is on how to order.

Five things: the unit, the brand, the grade, the size and the length behind one piece. Match those and whatever gap is left is a real gap. Miss one and you are holding two papers about two different orders.
Ek piece bolne par kitni lambai aati hai?
It depends on the line, and the four in the table above run from 1.5 m to 12 m. HMB publishes a full 20 feet section, Shyam Steel a 12 metre rod, Tata's plumbing pipe 3 m and 6 m, Everest seven sheet lengths between 1.50 m and 3.6 m.

How long is one piece at that figure?
Twenty feet, twelve metres and six metres are all one piece somewhere on this rack. Without the length, a per piece number cannot be turned into a per kilo one.
Is the number off the godown or delivered to my village?

Is GST already in it?
Ask in those words and get the answer written on the paper. A quote silent about it can be read both ways, and on a truck load the two readings sit far apart.
