GI pipe is steel tube that has been through a hot dip zinc bath, so the coat came off the works and not off a brush. Jay Shree Infra keeps it at the Saharsa godown beside the black pipe, in names that include Satyam, Tata Pipes, Kamdhenu Pipes, BST Infrasteel, Baba Ispat and Cognigent. What it goes into is below, and the load leaves in our own vehicles for Saharsa, Supaul and Madhepura.

The zinc changes the paperwork as much as it changes the tube. BIS scopes a licence for IS 1239 (Part 1) on the surface condition, black or galvanized, alongside the class, the grade of steel, the size, the manufacturing process and the end condition. A works licensed to sell a size in black is not thereby licensed to sell that size galvanised. The plain black side of this rack is on the MS pipe page.

The top row is a maker's published figure and the bottom row is honest about having none: a galvanised shed section is rolled to whatever profile the supplier runs, so no published chart covers it. Against the water side Tata publishes its galvanised tube from 15 to 150 mm nominal bore in light, medium and heavy class, walls of 2.0 to 5.4 mm, and a zinc coating of at least 360 grams per square metre, inside the bore as well as outside. Which bore, which class and which wall is standing here this morning is the call.

Kis kaam me lagta hai

Shed, godown and PACS work come first: columns, trusses and bracing, in warehouses and workshops. Then gates, grills, scaffolding and furniture frames, where the pipe makes the outline and angle and flat fill it in. Tata's own list against its galvanised line is a different set, hand pumps, plumbing, irrigation, HVAC, firefighting and cold storage, which is the water side of the same tube.

Which section and which wall a shed frame takes is on the fabricator's list, and what we do on the phone is read that list against what is standing. Where the frame and the roof are bought together, sheet, purlins and girts go out on the same vehicle.

  • The end condition is half a GI order

IS 1239 (Part 1) covers four end conditions, and a BIS licence names which of them a works may sell: plain, bevel ended, screwed end, and screwed and socketed. Only the last one arrives with the coupling socket already on it. Tata publishes its galvanised line as plain end or screwed and socketed, taper threads cut on the tube and parallel threads inside the socket, both to IS 554.

Threading is a checked operation. Under the BIS scheme one sample an hour comes off each threading machine, and a sample that fails condemns that machine's previous hour of production. So say on the call how the ends should come. It is a different tube, not a small adjustment at the counter.

  • Zinc is a licensed condition here

Galvanizing has a row of its own in the BIS scheme of inspection and testing for this standard, checked against IS 4736 at one sample from every control unit. On the test certificate it takes two cells of its own, the coating weight in grams per square metre and the uniformity result, and the black pipe's certificate carries neither.

Those are the two figures to ask for when a tender writes a coating weight into the specification.

  • Where the galvanising was done

It does not have to be the works that rolled the tube. BIS treats socketing, screwing and galvanizing as post black pipe operations, and a licensee may send black pipe out for them, but only to another holder of a valid IS 1239 (Part 1) licence, only control unit by control unit, and with both licensees carrying responsibility for what comes back.

The paperwork is built to chase that. The first works marks the black pipe and sends its test certificate with the consignment. The second adds a transfix label carrying the IS number, the Standard Mark and its own licence number, then issues a final certificate holding both sets of results with the batch or lot number, the size, the grade and the quantity. On tendered work, ask for that final certificate by name.

Brands

Whose tube comes through here galvanised

Satyam, Tata Pipes and Kamdhenu Pipes publish pipe ranges under their own names. Only Tata's published figures are quoted below, off the two Tata pages in the sources. Whether a name is standing in galvanised as well as in black is a separate question from whether we carry the name at all, and it is settled on the call.

Cognigent is spelled the way we bill it, and nobody has yet matched that spelling to a works, so on tendered work read us what is embossed on the tube instead. Baba Ispat reaches this rack the same way, a name without a matched maker behind it. BST Infrasteel's own site describes a steel supply and distribution business. Not every size is in every brand on a given day.

Sources

Sources behind the coating and the bore range

The BIS manual the galvanizing, the ends and the outsourcing rules come from, and the two maker's pages behind the published figures. IS 4736 dates from 1986 and carries four amendments, and IS 1239 (Part 1):2004 carries six, so what is quoted below is the BIS product manual of September 2023, not either standard directly.

Questions

Galvanised pipe par sawal

GI pipe aur shed ka GI section, dono ek hi cheez hain?

No. Round GI pipe is called out by nominal bore and by class under IS 1239 (Part 1), and it can come screwed and socketed. A galvanised shed section is a separate item, called out by its outside sides and its wall, with no class on it. Say which of the two the job wants, because every later question changes with that answer.

Jis brand ka kala pipe hai, wahi galvanised me bhi milega?

Not automatically. A BIS licence names the surface condition, black or galvanized, as part of its scope, so a works can be licensed for one and not the other in the same size. Give us the name and the bore in the same breath and we will say what is standing in galvanised against it.

GI pipe kaat kar welding karne par kata hua hissa kaisa rahega?

Bare steel. The zinc goes on to a finished tube at the works, so a cut face or a weld is steel with nothing over it. What to do about that on a particular frame is the fabricator's call.

GI pipe 3 meter me bhi milta hai?

Tata publishes exact 3 metre and 6 metre lengths for the plumbing bores, 15, 20 and 25 mm. That is the maker's published figure for that line. What a bundle on this floor is standing in on the day you ring is a separate answer, so ask for the bore, the class and the length together.

Gaon me chhoti si line ka kaam hai, thoda sa GI pipe bhi milega?

Yes. The plumbing side is sold by the piece or the bundle and the shed side by the piece or the tonne, so a few lengths is an ordinary order here. Say the bore, the class, how many pieces and the village, because the village decides which vehicle goes.

Contact

The zinc has its own line on the certificate

On a tendered job the sheet to ask us for is the certificate with the coating weight and the uniformity result on it. On a gate or a shed frame, ring +91 6202 967 218 with the bore or the section, the wall, and how the ends should come, and today's rate for that exact pipe comes back on the same call.
