TMT bar length: feet and metres
A full TMT bar is 12 metres long, the length the trade calls 40 feet. Measured out it is 39.37 feet, about seven and a half inches short of a true 40, and one factor, 0.3048, moves any figure between the feet on your tape and the metres on the bill.

Jobs here are measured in feet, grills, gates, chhajja lengths, and steel is rolled and billed in metres, so every sariya order crosses that line once. The mills print the metre side: SAIL's SeQR brochure gives 12.0 metres as its bar length, and Shyam Steel prints 12 metres and 40 feet side by side for its own rods. IS 1786, the TMT standard, fixes no length at all, so the 40 foot bar is trade shorthand for the 12 metre bar, not a different product. Sizes and grades for the bar itself sit on the TMT bar page.
A foot is 0.3048 metre exactly, everywhere and always. Feet times 0.3048 gives metres, metres times 3.281 gives feet back, and the two tables below run that both ways: once for the lengths the trade quotes, and once straight from running feet into kilograms, using the per metre weights the sariya weight chart publishes for every diameter.

Every row is the feet figure times 0.3048. The odd one out is the bar itself: 12 metres is 39.37 feet, which is 39 feet and about four and a half inches, so a true 40 feet, 12.19 metres, runs about 19 centimetres longer than the bar the vehicle brings. On a single grill that gap is nothing. On a long cutting list it adds up, so count in 39.37, not 40.

Per foot is the per metre figure times 0.3048. The per metre column is the one the sariya weight chart carries, checked there against the nominal mass IS 1786 prints, so feet, metres and kilos all trace to the same basis. Multiply your running feet by the per foot figure and the answer is ready for a kilo rate or a weighbridge slip.

From the tape to the bill
A gate frame measures 120 running feet of 10 mm. In metres, 120 times 0.3048 is 36.6. In kilograms, 36.6 times 0.617 is about 22.6. Or in one step, 120 times 0.188 lands on the same 22.6 kg. In pieces, 36.6 metres is a shade over three full bars, so the order is four pieces if every length must be cut clean, or three and a joint where the drawing allows one.
Bring the feet figure as the tape gave it. The conversion happens once, out loud, and the metre figure is read back to you before anything is cut or counted, so the tape, the saw and the bill all say the same thing.
Cut lengths
Ordering shorter than the full bar
A bar can be cut to the length the job needs, and here IS 1786 does set a rule, the only length rule it has: a specified length may come up to 75 mm over and 25 mm under, about three inches and one inch. A 10 foot piece can therefore arrive a couple of fingers long, and that is the standard working as written, not a cutting mistake.
Pieces bound into bundles follow their own arithmetic, how many the mill ties and what the tie weighs, and that sits on the rods per bundle guide. Whatever the length, the per foot column above holds, so a cut order still turns into kilos with the same one multiplication. No brand keeps every diameter standing every day, and cut lengths depend on what is standing, so the size, the brand and the cut go together on the call.
