Reading a SAIL SeQR bundle tag

A SAIL SeQR bundle answers for itself in three places: the tag tied to the bundle, the letters rolled into the bar, and the certificate that travels with the load. Reading all three takes less time than untying the strap, and on SeQR you know in advance what each one should say.

Checking any brand's bundle, mark by mark, is a procedure of its own, and how to identify genuine ISI marked TMT walks it from the tag down to the licence check. On a SAIL SeQR load the same reads get specific. The grade line can only say one of two things, the size can only be one of six, the bar itself should say SAIL SeQR, and there is no SeQR size the certificate rule leaves out.

That last point is worth holding on to. The law draws its line at 8 mm: below it, no ISI mark or certificate is compelled on sariya. SeQR's own published table starts at 8 mm, so the small-size exception never applies to this brand. Every SeQR bundle should carry the mark, and every SeQR consignment should come with its paper.

First read

The tag, line by line

IS 1786 puts a tag on every bundle, and it must carry three things: the cast or lot number, the grade, and the size. On a SeQR tag, the cast or lot number names the batch of liquid steel the bars were rolled from, and the same number should appear again on the certificate; it is the thread that ties the steel in your hand to the test results on the paper. The grade line should read Fe 500D or Fe 550D, because those are the only two grades SAIL publishes for SeQR. The size should be 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 or 25 mm, the six diameters on SeQR's own table.

So the tag is checked against two things at once: against your order, and against SeQR's short list. A tag showing a grade or size that SeQR's table does not carry is worth a phone call before anything else happens to that bundle.

Second read

SAIL SeQR, rolled into the steel

Pull one rod clear and look along it between the ribs. The brand and the grade are pressed into the bar while it is rolled, and on this line they read SAIL SeQR with the grade beside it, 550D on the Fe 550D bar; SAIL's own brochure photographs show exactly that lettering raised along the rod. Because the letters are formed in hot steel, they repeat down the whole length and cannot be peeled off or retied the way a tag can.

On a bar made under a BIS licence, a six digit identification number is marked along the rod as well, repeating at intervals of not more than 3 metres. Two of its digits name the BIS branch office behind the licence and four are the tail of the licence number itself. Read it out to us on the phone and we tell you what it names.

Third read

The ISI mark and the licence number behind it

From 8 mm up, the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, S.O. 3716(E), requires sariya to carry the ISI Standard Mark under a BIS licence. Since the thinnest SeQR is 8 mm, that requirement reaches every bundle of this brand: there is no SeQR diameter on which a missing mark can be shrugged off. The licence itself has a number, written CM/L followed by digits, and it is printed on the certificate beside the mark.

That CM/L number is checkable from a phone in the yard. The BIS Care app, free on Android, has a Verify Licence Details screen: type the number in and BIS's own record for that licence comes back. It is a one minute check that does not depend on anyone's word, ours included.

The paper

The certificate that comes with the load

Every SeQR consignment travels with a test certificate from the mill, and the BIS product manual for IS 1786 fixes what it must show: the Standard Mark, the cast or lot number, the grade, the size, and the results of the tests, with the CM/L licence number printed alongside. Set it against the tag and the bar. When all three name the same cast, grade and size, the load has answered every question worth asking at the vehicle. What that certificate is worth on a tendered job, and when a department will demand it, is covered in what an MTC is.

A weighing scale closes the loop. SAIL prints a weight per metre against every SeQR size, 0.888 kg at 12 mm for one, and the sariya weight chart carries the full table with the tolerance the standard allows either side.

Three reads on one bundle

Where a SeQR bundle answers for itself, and what each read should show.

Where to readWhat it shows

Rolled into the barSAIL SeQR with the grade, and a six digit BIS number every 3 m
Certificate with the loadStandard Mark, cast number, grade, size, test results, CM/L number

The tag and the certificate carry what the BIS product manual for IS 1786 fixes for them; the lettering on the bar is in the SAIL SeQR brochure's own photographs, with the six digit BIS number repeating along the rod.

Read it to us before the strap is cut

Photograph the tag and the lettering on the bar and send both on WhatsApp, or read them out on the call: the cast number, the grade, the size, and the CM/L number off the paper. We match them against the consignment that came into the godown and tell you what you are holding. The habit costs half a minute per load and settles arguments that otherwise start weeks later, when the sariya is already inside a column.

The same three reads, in less specific form, work on every brand on the rack, and the rest of our buying guides sit beside this one.

Questions

SeQR tag ke sawal

SeQR bundle ke tag par kaun si teen baatein hoti hain?

The cast or lot number, the grade and the size, which is what IS 1786 requires on every bundle tag. On SeQR the grade can only be Fe 500D or Fe 550D and the size one of 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 or 25 mm. The cast number is the important one to keep: it should appear again on the certificate that comes with the load.

SAIL SeQR ke bar par khud kya likha rehta hai?

SAIL SeQR and the grade, raised in the steel between the ribs while the bar was rolled, plus a six digit BIS licence number repeating at least every 3 metres on licensed bar. Rolled letters cannot be changed after the fact, so when a tag and a bar tell two different stories, the bar is the one to believe.

Kya har SAIL SeQR bundle par ISI mark hona chahiye?

Yes. The 2024 Quality Control Order compels the Standard Mark on sariya from 8 mm up, and SeQR's published sizes start exactly there, so no SeQR bundle falls outside the rule. The licence's CM/L number can be verified in the BIS Care app in about a minute.

SeQR ke load ke sath kaun sa kagaz aata hai?

A test certificate from the mill, showing the Standard Mark, the cast or lot number, the grade, the size and the test results, with the CM/L licence number beside the mark. Match its cast number against the tag on the bundle. If you need it for a tender file, say so on +91 6202 967 218 while ordering and it travels with the vehicle.

Tag phata ya gum ho jaye to kya karein?

The bar still tells you almost everything: SAIL SeQR, the grade, and the licence number are rolled into the steel itself and repeat along every rod. Read those out on +91 6202 967 218 with the diameter, and where the consignment's certificate is with us, we tie the two together from the cast number on our copy.

At the vehicle

Four reads before the bundle comes down

Tag, bar, mark, paper: each one takes seconds and each can stop a wrong load in time.

  • Does the tag show a cast number, one of SeQR's two grades, and one of its six sizes?

    Fe 500D or Fe 550D; 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 or 25 mm. Anything else on a SeQR tag is a phone call, not a delivery.

  • Does the bar itself read SAIL SeQR with the grade?

The rolled lettering repeats down the rod and cannot be swapped. Where the tag and the bar disagree, believe the bar.

  • Is the ISI mark on the bundle?

Every SeQR size is 8 mm or above, so the mark belongs on every bundle of this brand, with a CM/L number on the paper behind it.

  • Does the certificate carry the same cast number as the tag?

That one match ties the test results to the steel in front of you. Ask for the certificate while ordering, and it rides with the load.
