HR vs CR vs GP sheet
HR sheet is rolled hot and leaves the mill black, from 2 mm thick upward under IS 1079:2017; CR sheet is that same steel rolled cold a second time, down to about a quarter of a millimetre, under IS 513 (Part 1):2016; GP sheet is HR or CR coil run through a zinc bath and coated to IS 277:2018.

The three letters name a process, not three different metals, and the process is what fixes the finish and the thickness a sheet can run to. The table below carries the standard, the process, the finish and the published thickness range for each one; the sections after it say where each sheet actually belongs on a job.

Every figure in this row comes off SAIL's own published tables for its Bokaro and Rourkela plants, read plant by plant, plus Tata Steelium's own published range for its Cold Rolled EDD line. A published thickness band is the mill's own rolling capability, not a stock list; what is standing at this godown on a given morning is the call.
The standard changes with the process. IS 1079:2017 covers hot rolled sheet, plate and strip together, so the word sheet on that standard runs into the word plate at the thick end. IS 513 (Part 1):2016 covers cold reduced sheet for cold forming and drawing, and IS 277:2018 covers the zinc coated sheet on top of either one.
Thickness narrows as the process adds a step. HR runs from 2 mm on SAIL's own rationalised sheet list; CR starts under half a millimetre because the second cold pass is what makes a thin sheet possible; GP sits close to CR at the thin end because it usually starts from the same coil.
What each one is
Hot, cold and coated, not three different steels
HR, CR and GP all start as the same hot rolled coil off the strip mill. HR sheet is that coil cut and sold as it comes off the mill, black with mill scale still on it, under IS 1079:2017. Send the same coil through the rolls again at room temperature and it comes out CR, smooth faced and thinner, under IS 513 (Part 1):2016.
Run either an HR or a CR coil through a hot dip zinc bath and it becomes GP, galvanised plain, under IS 277:2018. The zinc is what changes; nothing about the base steel underneath it does. So the three names describe a process a sheet has been through, not three different metals.
Where each one belongs
Heavy, precise or outdoor, and that decides the pick
HR is the sheet for weight and mass: tanks, machinery bodies, platforms, brackets and base plates that get cut, welded and painted afterward, where a millimetre either way matters less than the steel being there.
CR is the sheet for control: panels, cabinets, electrical enclosures and furniture that get bent, pressed or drawn into a precise shape, where the face has to stay smooth after the bend. GP is the sheet for weather: ducting, roofing components and outdoor fabrication, where the zinc does the job paint would otherwise have to do.

The limit
What the standard says, and what the mill actually rolls
IS 1079, IS 513 and IS 277 set the rules a sheet has to meet; they do not set what any one mill has standing on a given day. A mill's own published thickness bands run wider than what a Saharsa godown carries, because a brochure covers every plant and every grade a mill rolls, not the range one counter stocks.
So the standard number on a consignment paper is a starting point, not the whole answer. Read the millimetre, and the coating class where there is one, off the actual sheet or its test certificate, and confirm on the call what is standing against the thickness your job needs.

HR, CR aur GP sheet ke sawal
Tank ya bracket ke liye kaunsi sheet leni chahiye?
HR sheet, kyunki wahan weight aur mass chahiye, thickness ki himmat, ek chikni satah nahi. SAIL ka rationalised HR sheet 2 mm se shuru hokar plate tak jaata hai, aur painting baad me ho jaati hai.
Bahar rakhi jaane wali cheez ke liye GP hi kyun?
Kyunki uspar zinc ki coating chadhi hoti hai, jo bina paint ke bhi jung se bachati hai. GP IS 277:2018 ke tahat aata hai, aur coating alag se grams per square metre me batayi jaati hai, SAIL ke Bokaro plant par 80 se 600 g/m2 tak.
1.5 mm se moti CR sheet milegi?
SAIL ka Bokaro CRM-III coil 0.4 se 2.0 mm tak rolled sizes rakhta hai, aur sheet 0.6 se 2.0 mm tak, isliye 1.5 mm us range ke andar hai. Kis din kaunsi thickness khadi hai, yeh call par pakka hoga.
Teeno sheet same coil se banti hain kya?
Shuruaat ki HR coil ek hi hoti hai. Usi coil ko cold rolls se dobara guzaarne par CR banti hai, aur HR ya CR dono me se kisi ko zinc bath se guzaarne par GP. Farak process ka hai, dhaatu ka nahi.

Which of the three does the job actually call for, HR, CR or GP?
Uncoated heavy work is HR; a piece that gets bent or drawn to a precise shape is CR; anything facing weather is GP.
What thickness does the drawing or tender specify?
Thickness sets the weight on every sheet, and on CR it also sets how far the piece can be drawn without cracking.
Will the finished piece stand outdoors or stay dry indoors?
Outdoors points at GP for the zinc; indoors leaves HR or CR plus a coat of paint as the choice.
Sheet cut to size, or full coil?
Both forms are rolled on all three; say the finished size and how many pieces so the cut can be planned.
Tata, SAIL, or unbranded HR?
CR and GP come under Tata Steel and SAIL at this counter; HR sheet carries no brand name on this rack.
