Pre monsoon construction checklist

Ten bags is the height to build to, not fifteen. UltraTech's own storage article and Nuvoco's monsoon note both say ten, and the reason both give is the same: bags low in a tall stack take the weight of everything above them, and pressure makes lumps. Off the floor on a wooden plank or pallet, at least 150 mm by UltraTech's own figure, is the other half of it, because a floor holds water long after the yard around it has dried.

The bag also carries its own clock. Cement in a dealer's hands is due a retest three months after the week printed on the sack, under IS 269:2015 as the Ministry of Railways set it out in a February 2022 CAMTECH pamphlet, and the full run of that figure, the stack height and the floor gap is worked out size by size on the cement in the monsoon guide.

Reinforcement left flat on wet ground through the rains takes rust and mud both, and the fix costs nothing more than a plank or two under the stack. IS 4082, the BIS standard for stacking and storage of construction material at site, covers exactly this ground, and the trade answer under it is the one carried on any organised site: raise the bars clear of standing water, sort them by diameter and grade so the wrong bundle is not cut into by mistake, and keep the stack where the rain runs off rather than in.

None of that changes what the call itself needs to order the steel. Diameter, grade and the count still decide the rate; what changes is where the bundle stands once it has come off the vehicle.

A roof already up is the one item on this list that is finished work already, and the thing worth doing before the rains is looking at the screws rather than the sheet. Tata Steel Colors publishes class 3 screws with EPDM rubber sealing washers for its own coated sheet and tells installers to keep stainless steel screws, J hooks and carbon washers off it, because the wrong washer is where a roof starts leaking first. A rolling shutter carries its own version of the same job. MS black patti leaves this godown bare, and a curtain still waiting on its paint or powder coat going into the wet months sits in bare steel through it; GI arrives galvanised and asks nothing more of the workshop. Where a curtain has already been welded up and is still uncoated, that coat is the one thing worth finishing before the rain starts rather than after.

Waterproofing liquid is stirred into the mixing water while a slab or a plaster coat is still being made, and it does nothing for a roof that has already been cast. If a slab is still ahead of you this season, order the can with the cement rather than after; if a roof already exists and is leaking, that is a different job and a different product, and the call is the place to say which one you actually have.
