Asbestos sheet, and the alternatives to it

IS 459:1992 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for corrugated and semi-corrugated asbestos cement sheets, now in its third revision with four amendments on record under committee CED 53. What goes up on a shed or godown roof at Jay Shree Infra's counter today, for a new job, is one of three other sheets: GC (tina) sheet, colour-coated sheet, or a fibre-cement sheet from Everest or Charminar.

Jay Shree Infra runs this off the roofing and shed rack in Saharsa and out into Supaul and Madhepura. Not every size is in every brand on a given day. The rack has moved toward steel and the modern fibre-cement lines for new sheds and godowns, and the four sheets on it, GC, colour-coated and two makers' fibre-cement sheet, sit under four different standards, so the certificate on a load names one entry and not the others.

IS 459 itself covers corrugated and semi-corrugated asbestos cement sheets by name, the specification the Bureau publishes for the sheet's own dimensions, strength and testing, not a ruling on where it can go up. Charminar, under BirlaNu, names IS 459:1992 directly on its own fibre cement roof page and prints the fullest size table of the four rows: 1050 mm width, 6 mm thickness, 1 to 4.25 m lengths, a corrugation pitch of 146 mm and about 12.3 to 12.7 kg per metre. Everest's roofing page carries a family at the same 1050 mm width whose own technical image is still captioned Asbestos Fibre Cement Roofing Sheets, though that page names no IS number. GC sheet and colour-coated sheet are steel, not cement, and sit under two separate entries of the Ministry of Steel's 2024 Quality Control Order, IS 277:2018 for the plain sheet and IS 14246:2013 or IS 15965:2012 for the painted one.

Read the standard column before the thickness column. A load's own certificate names one of these entries, and a fibre-cement certificate naming IS 459 says nothing about a GC or colour-coated load's IS 277 or IS 14246 certificate, because the three cover different materials rather than one family of roofing sheet under one mark.

Charminar's own page is the only one of the four that gives a full published dimension set against IS 459, and it does so for a current product it sells today under BirlaNu, which is worth reading against the sheet's older name.

The record's own status fields show no reaffirmation year against the entry. It is a product specification, setting out dimensions, strength and testing for the sheet itself, sourced to the Bureau's own record and to no other government document.

Charminar's own current page for its fibre cement roof names this same IS 459:1992 as the standard behind the sheet it sells today under the BirlaNu name, at 1050 mm overall width, 6 mm thickness, a 146 mm corrugation pitch and lengths from 1 to 4.25 m, weighing about 12.3 to 12.7 kg per metre and covering 91 percent of a 3 m sheet's own length or 87 percent of a 1.5 m one once the laps are taken out.

What actually goes up on a new shed or godown roof

Three sheets carry a new job here. The GC sheet is galvanised steel to IS 277:2018, 0.30 and 0.45 mm on this counter's own list. The colour-coated sheet is painted steel at 0.35, 0.45 and 0.47 mm, certified under IS 14246:2013 or IS 15965:2012 depending on the coating. Both are steel, both are lighter than a cement sheet of the same span, and both sit under the Ministry of Steel's 2024 Quality Control Order rather than under IS 459.

The cement side of the rack runs on Everest and Charminar, and their own literature does not read as one line. Everest's roofing page carries a family whose own technical image is captioned Asbestos Fibre Cement Roofing Sheets at 1.05 m overall width, while a separate Everest brochure markets Hi-Tech as a non-asbestos cement roofing reinforced with high-impact PVA fibres. Charminar, under BirlaNu, publishes Fiber Cement Roofs, Fortune and Ultracool as three lines under one roofing family, with Fortune built on a hybrid fibre reinforcement. Ask which of those lines a quote is actually naming before a roof goes up under it.

Checks before the sheet is chosen

A corrugation cut for one standard does not lap onto a sheet cut for another. Charminar's own 1050 mm width and 146 mm pitch belong to its fibre cement roof and to no steel sheet on this rack, so a repair on an existing cement roof needs a cement sheet at that same width and pitch, not a GC or colour sheet bent to a different wave. Bring the width, the pitch and the standard off whatever is already up when a repair or an extension is being ordered.

Weight is the other line worth reading before the width. Charminar's own figure of about 12.3 to 12.7 kg per metre run puts a fibre cement roof well above a steel sheet of the same span, which changes what the purlins under it were built to carry. Ask the same question of a colour or GC roof going up in the cement roof's place: the purlin spacing on the drawing was set for one weight, and a lighter or heavier sheet changes what that spacing has to be.

The Bureau's own catalogue record for IS 459 gives a title, a revision, a committee and an amendment count; it does not carry a ruling on where the material can or cannot be used, and no other government document carries one either. Where a site, a tender or a department names its own rule on the material, that rule governs the job and is worth asking about before an order is placed, alongside the certificate, the width and the pitch of whatever sheet is finally chosen.
