Do heat reducing (Coolshield) sheets work

Tata Steel Colors publishes no solar reflectance figure and no SRI number against its own CoolShield roofing sheet. The only percentages on its site sit on a separate article about reflective roofing as a category, up to 70 to 80 percent of solar heat reflected and 15 to 30 percent off the first year's energy bill, with Durashine named among the technologies discussed but no figure pinned to it by name. What CoolShield's own product page states plainly is what it is built from: a Zinc-Aluminium coated steel top sheet, a 5 mm XLPE insulation layer, and an aluminium foil backing, at the same 0.37 to 0.62 mm thickness range as the rest of the Durashine roof line.

CoolShield is a build inside that Tata Durashine line, not a separate brand, and what follows is what its own maker actually publishes about it, not a heat reduction percentage nobody has tested against the sheet itself. Not every size is in every brand on a given day.

CoolShield is built in three layers: an outer sheet of high strength steel with a Zinc-Aluminium coating, a 5 mm layer of XLPE insulation under it, and an aluminium foil that closes the underside to a smooth finish. The steel itself carries the same 0.37, 0.47, 0.52 and 0.62 mm painted thickness options as the rest of the Durashine roof line, so the insulation is what changes, not the steel it sits on.

CoolShield's own product page and the cooling roof sheets article are two different pages on the same maker's site, and they say two different kinds of thing. The product page describes the sheet in front of you and carries no number at all. The article is about reflective and insulated roofing as a category, PUF panels, aluminium sheets, FRP sheets and Durashine named together in one paragraph, and the two percentages sit there, against the category rather than against any one tested sheet.

CoolShield's own product page is entirely without a number: no R-value, no U-value, no Solar Reflectance Index and no percentage sit anywhere on it. What sits there instead is what it is built from, in plain sentences, three times over: the steel, the insulation, the foil.

The two range figures that do exist on the maker's site sit on a different page altogether, written about cool roofing as a category rather than about one SKU. Read the 70 to 80 percent and the 15 to 30 percent as what that category claims for itself, not as a certificate for the sheet on your order.

The build

Three layers, and what each one does

The outer sheet is the same family of steel as the rest of the Durashine roof line, high strength steel with a Zinc-Aluminium coating. Under it sits a 5 mm layer of XLPE insulation, and under that an aluminium foil that closes the sandwich and gives the underside a smooth finish.

Tata Steel Colors' own sentence for what the three layers do together: it reduces heat penetration in summer and gives better thermal protection in winter, cuts down the sound and vibration rain makes on the roof, and stops moisture forming on the inside surface. No degree, no decibel and no percentage rides with any of those three claims.

The other page

Where the 70 to 80 percent and the 15 to 30 percent actually sit

A second article on the same maker's site, about cool roofing as a category rather than one product, states that reflective roofing can reflect up to 70 to 80 percent of solar heat, and that switching to an insulated or reflective roof can cut energy bills 15 to 30 percent in the first year. Both figures are given for the category as a whole, polyurethane sandwich panels, aluminium reflective sheets, FRP sheets and Tata Durashine all named together in the same paragraph.

Durashine's own mention in that article carries no number of its own, only that it has solar reflectivity and corrosion resistance built in. That gap between a category claim and a tested figure for one sheet is not somebody's guess to close, so the honest way to read those two numbers is as what reflective roofing claims for itself as a category, not as CoolShield's own rated performance.

The buyer's answer

Kya Coolshield lagane se sach me farak padta hai

What changes: a 5 mm insulated layer sits under the steel where a plain colour-coated sheet has none, and that layer is what the maker's own qualitative claims, summer heat, winter cold, rain noise, inside moisture, are attached to.

What does not change: the outer steel, its coating and its thickness options are the same Durashine range already on this rack, fixed the same way, ordered the same way, in the same lengths. Purlin and girt spacing under a Durashine roof is a separate published question again, with its own figures by thickness and span; ask for those on the same call.
