In English100 kg (a metric quintal, symbol q)
Quintal is a mandi word before it is a steel word, carried over from grain and jute weighing, and it sits comfortably in a sariya order because sariya itself is one of the lines sold by weight here. Ten bundles read out as so many quintals settle a bill faster than the same weight read out in kilograms, and a dharamkanta ticket on a loaded vehicle is usually printed in quintals for that reason.
One quintal is 100 kg exactly, so a hundred kilogram bag or bundle and a one quintal load are the same figure said two ways. Above a few quintals a load is usually spoken of in tonnes instead, ten quintals to the tonne, and which word gets used on a call is mostly a matter of which number sounds shorter to say.
How a quintal is quoted
Paanch quintal sariya, Birpur ke liye, dharamkanta pe taul dijiye.
Five quintals of TMT bar, for Birpur, weighed on the weighbridge. Five quintals is 500 kg, and naming the weighbridge is what tells the counter the deal is going on weight, not on the piece.
Where the quintal turns up on a bill
The product it most often weighs, and how a rate moves with the basis it is quoted on.
