Binding wire is tar, the soft annealed wire that ties one reinforcement bar to the next, at every crossing, before the concrete goes in.

Tar is the word used at the counter, and clause 7.2 of IS 2502 is the standard behind it: wire securing crossing bars has to be annealed to IS 280 and at least 0.90 mm thick. Tata Steel sells its own binding wire, Tata Wiron, in five diameters, 0.61, 0.71, 0.89, 0.91 and 1.22 mm, and three of those five sit under the figure the code asks for. So the millimetre printed on the coil, not the gauge number said out loud, is what settles whether a coil suits a cage.
It is sold by the coil and by weight, in kilos, and the diameter has to be said along with the quantity because gauge numbers are not the same thing across sellers. A tonne of sariya does not fix how much tar a job takes either: the number of ties comes off the structural drawing's bar spacing, and only the length of wire in one finished tie is a number the man tying the cage can give you.

One kilo of 0.91 mm wire, sent along with the TMT. The diameter and the basis, by weight, are both said; the brand and the coil size still need confirming on the call.
